well, it looks like after years of use I finally got hit with my first ebay scam.

Shortly after I sent in my paypal payment for my xbox 360 I received an e-mail from ebay saying that the seller I bought from has been suspended from ebay and all their active auctions have been pulled. I went and verified...sure enough the auction I won is no longer listed.

Crap, if only I had waited a couple of hours to pay.

Well, I started the process with paypal trying to resolve it...and I used my credit card so if all else fails I can have my card issue a chargeback.

It does piss me off though.

That's pretty lame. At least you used a credit card and ebay alerted you to the problem quickly. Too bad there are so many nasty people out there messing up the place for the rest of us.

ya, I'm not too worried about being out money at this point (that could change if it looks like it won't work out though)...it is more of an annoyance at this point.

Truth is, I got kind of careless. I usually don't buy from people with low feedback scores, even if they were 100% positive (like this one). I guess I should have waited until a local store got one in stock.

At least now hatrack will get to hear about how well (or not well) the paypal dispute resolution system works.

I hope all goes well. I have heard very bad things about PayPal's resolution system, but that was several years ago. It would be great to hear that they've started giving better customer service.

I just had an eBay frustration too-- from the other end. Someone didn't pay and I had to go through eBay's non-paying buyer process. And it was annoying.

Being frustrated and disappointed is no fun. My sympathies.

I had paypal give me a full refund when I didn't get an item. The seller even insisted that he mailed it.

I'm really nervous - I just bought something from someone with only 17 feedbacks. They were all positive, but still - it was kind of expensive. I'm crossing my fingers.

I got a refund once when a seller didn't mail it, and he was horrible about it. I gave him bad feedback, and he sent me an e-mail saying he'd give me bad feedback unless I withdrew mine. Total blackmail. He also swore that he sent it and tracked it and UPS said it showed up, but he wouldn't share the tracking number.

Jon Boy's account was hacked almost a year ago. The scam was that someone in Sweden or something was hacking accounts of people with 100% positive feedback so as to assure potential victims that they were safe sending them their money. Jon Boy had a hard time getting eBay to refund the listing fees for the dozens of "handbags" he was apparently selling.

So, you can never be totally safe, even if you go on feedback scores. My advice would be to pay attention, and if something seems fishy, it probably is. In Jon Boy's case, there were dozens of other hacked accounts at the same time, all selling dozens of handbags with the same barely readable English. A lot of the wording was even the same. If anyone had stopped to think, "Huh. These apparently different people are all selling the same thing in the same way. That's weird," fewer people would have been victimized.

I've been on ebay for six years and only have 36. Some of us just are not power sellers. That doesn't mean you shouldn't be careful.

I've had my Ebay account for more than 8 years and only have 4 feedbacks. I've made a lot more transactions than that, and left feedback for all of them. Many just haven't returned the favor, despite my gentle reminders.

Which just feeds the complex.

awesome...I got the money back today!

What a relief. I got a message from paypal saying that all my money had been refunded...and sure enough, I checked my account and it was fixed.

That's great, Lupus - I'm glad it got straightened out. I have 100% positive feedback too, but I've done more buying than selling lately. I also had my account hacked and it took over a month before I got my account back with all the negative stuff removed from it. [Frown]

I HATE that. [Wall Bash]
Why don't people leave feedback?

Because they don't read Chris' columns and have no idea what to say?

The next feedback I leave will be something like this.

"Very good. Now please leave me feedback. So few bother."

That's a good one. Ebay should put in a pending feedback option. If they do not leave feedback for you, they do not get your feedback.

Seriously. You should be able to submit your feedback to a "buffer" and not actually have it posted until you see that the other party has also submitted feedback. You could even resolve feedback disputes before the feedback is actually posted. That would take away a lot of headaches.
