Hmmm...

I havent read the book yet, as Im working my way through his earliest books first. Wolud it make a good movie?

Sure it COULD make a good movie, if its in the same vein as Patriot Games or Clear and Present danger. If it goes the XxX route Ill chew on glass until I die.

*Spoiler YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED! You really don't want to read this if you have yet to read the book and plan to!!!!*

If it's made into a movie the reviewer responses to Reuben getting shot and killed abruptly would entertain me greatly.

***End of Spoilers.

That said, Empire getting the movie treatment before Ender's Game is a tragedy in of itself.

BlackBlade, agreed. Unfortunately, WB wants to make sure it can profit from the movie, and it will have a very high special effects budget. If it flops, they will lose money. I have a high suspicion that it will flop if it's not done correctly. If OSC has sole control over the script, I have faith, but that might not happen.

Sounds neat in theory. We'll see how it plays out. It does remind me that I need to read Empire (it's been near the top of my reading stack since I got it, just other things typically get placed on top of it).

I suppose if Empire is quite successful it will provide the impetus for Ender's Game to be made into a movie.

"From the author who brought you Empire comes a tale of a genius called upon to save our species from annihilation."

Of all the great movie possibilities of OSC's books, if this one gets made I will be very upset. It isn't bad, but it is hardly worthy of a movie compared to others.

Then again, it is more "mindless entertainment" than any other OSC book, so I can see why it could be made above others. Sad commentary on the state of films these days. It has been years since I have been excited about going to the movies.

Agreed. OSC was my favorite author until Empire, and if the book that turned me off him goes to film before Ender's Game...I'll be really frustrated.

We might as well accept the fact that the Enders Game movie is just not gonna happen. So Empire might be the best we can get!

Regardless of how you feel about Empire's politics, it's not the fact that it's "mindless entertainment" that makes it lend itself to becoming a movie. It's the fact that it's shorter and much more action oriented than Ender's Game. Films, by definition, work better with stories that are primarily dialogue or action. Films simply can't get into someone's head the way a novel can, or not as easily at any rate. Each medium has its advantages, and the advantages of film are almost universally better suited for Empire than Ender's Game.

Which makes me sad. I want to see Ender's Game too. But them's the breaks.

Well said Dan, but I'm going to remain optimistic because WB is still claiming to produce it.

It's not so much the politics that bothered me, it's that the book was bad. The worst he's written and they HAVE to pick that one!

I'd eat a puppy to see Enchantment on the big screen.

I wouldn't say Empire was bad, just not his best. I still enjoyed the read. The ending was abrupt, but it was still an entertaining read, just short.

Great, soon we'll have yet another Hollywood movie that grossly mis-portrays the academic lifestyle.

I guess doctors, lawyers and therapists still have it worse than we do in this regard.

They should get Vin Diesel to play Rube. I'd love to hear him deliver the line, "I'm in the mood to kill assholes today. Try not to be one."

This pretty much sums up my feelings on the book.

But with his recent column declaring a hiatus from teaching I imagine he will have FAR more time to devout to writing. I expect the quality of his writing and frequency to both increase!

*thumbs up*
