My air conditioner is crapping out on me. Which is really frustrating, since I like to sleep in cold, and I work largely out of my house.
My father plans to come up and re-do the whole cooling...things...in the house at some point, but that's probably not going to be for a while. In the meantime, I want to get a portable air conditioner from either Lowes or Home Depot, assuming they'll deliver it. I want it to be one of those places so that I can actually go see it before I buy it.
What's good? I'll need to cool about 550 square feet.

I just bought a frigidaire from Best Buy for $120, works wonders. Even has a thermostat, and energy saver option that turns itself off when reaching the desired temperature. I was just looking to cool my bedroom, so you might need something that costs a little bit more. You shouldn't have to pay more then $200 though, could be as low as $90 if you go for an off brand.

Mine fit in the back seat of my car. I would imagine Best Buy delivers considering how big some of their products are.

Only $200 for a portable? You were luckier than I was back when we were looking for an air conditioner. We paid a little under $400 for ours and felt pretty good about ourselves.

My house is essentially one large open space for kitchen/living/office, a bedroom, and a bathroom. There's a passthrough from the bedroom into the front room so that the air can circulate. Until this air conditioner died, I didn't have too much trouble keeping things cool with one in-wall unit in the bedroom. But I'm also wondering if maybe the size of the place put too much strain on the little thing...?
I have no idea how long it'll take my dad to come fix these things. He is notoriously slow at realizing when something is an issue if it isn't glaring him in the face all the time, and he's several states away. But I imagine I'll keep using the thing, if only to lessen the strain on whatever replacement unit I get, unless my dad decides to do central air...which could be tricky. So I don't know.
