Apple's World Wide Developer Conference 2007 is here, and there has been no announcement of OS X being licensed to run on non-Apple hardware. The closest they came was the iPhone, which runs OS X.

We were never clear on whether the bet was to the beginning of WWDC 07, the end, or to the keynote, but the keynote is currently in progress, and I suspect that if no licensing deal is announced during the keynote, then there won't be any such announcement during the rest of WWDC.

I just moved a lot closer to being sold on the next OS X release, though, because they appear to have -- at long last -- fixed the Mac OS X Finder.

Prior to WWDC, I wasn't sold on Leopard. Most of the stuff they revealed about it last year seemed useless for someone like me. Reading the stuff happening at WWDC right now though, some of it's really interesting and I want to play around with it. Since I'm going to get a new computer soon, I may just try and hold out until October and get a new Mac with Leopard on it.

I will be in touch to make delivery arrangements. [Smile]

As much as I would enjoy savouring the taste of a delicious cola, I'd be willing to entertain the idea of renewing the bet for double or nothing. [Wink]

Two cokes? That is some dangerous ante-upping! [Wink]

He is obviously a .....Coke addict. [Wink]

Double or nothing, 2009 WWDC?

Heck, I'll be so bold as to allow any soft drink bottled by the Coca-Cola Company in the U.S.

I'm that nutty.

OT:

Is this the conference where they tell how much they are changing the Ipod and how long I need to wait until I buy my first one? Or am I still waiting?

Dag, you obviously have a reckless gambling problem.

*stages intervention*

Wow. Ballsy. We should probably clarify the terms a little bit, though, because when we initially made the bet it would never have occurred to me that OS X would run on something like the iPhone (which it does).

No. There probably won't be much of anything iPod-related at WWDC. It's more about software and Macs and stuff like that than consumer electronics, though particularly in future ones there will likely be some iPhone development stuff as well.

Trying to claim a win based on the iPhone would be cheap. [Smile] (The original bet said "non-Apple hardware", so iPhone wouldn't count anyway.)

Let's say that I win if they either offer OSX as a separate consumer ("shrink-wrap") product licensed to run on non-Apple hardware or if they grant OEM licenses to one or more PC makers such as Dell for sale of new computers - laptops or desktops, but not PDAs or smartphones.

Posted by twinky (Member # 693) on :

That's exactly what I was thinking.

What I meant by the iPhone comment was that if Apple were to license OS X to run on a non-Apple-branded phone, it would technically win you the bet, though it would fall outside the scope of what we envisioned when we made it.

So I'm fine with clarifying the bet as described in your second paragraph and then extending it to WWDC 2009 and two Cokes.

Done.

Oh, and I can stop whenever I want to, dkw!

Posted by twinky (Member # 693) on :

So, now that the die is cast, do you actually think it's likely to happen?

Posted by Dagonee (Member # 5818) on :

No idea, really - I haven't found any reason to change my mind, but I haven't seen anything to make my feeling about it stronger. But I've been much more removed from the IT world in the last 6 months.

I do think there will be licensed OSX on third-party PCs someday.

So in 20 years, maybe I'll owe you 1,024 cokes. [Smile]

In ten years you'd owe him 1,024 cokes. In 20 years, you might owe him 1,048,576 cokes.

Although, the way these coke habits tend to grow and the addict's tolerance increases, in 20 years that might only partially satisfy twink's need for a fix.

Done. Of course, I don't want to stop, so there's no real way to test this.

Betting on hot beverages is just wrong. By the time the games over, they're all cold an nasty.

It's two years per bet.

Ahh, I see. Concern over Dag's madd math skillz withdrawn.

It's not betting on hot beverages. It's betting with hot beverages. You didn't buy the coke for twinky 2 years ago when you made the bet and hold it 'til now, did you? [Razz]

Of course. It would be wrong to bet what I didn't have. [Wink] Of course, the bottle of Coke in my cupboard with a label "twinky" on it has confused more than a few people who think I can't tell my high-sugar empty-calorie caffeine-laced soft drinks from my high-sugar empty-calorie cream-filled sponge cakes.

You're going to run into storage problems in 14 years or so.
