Just started posting pics from the vacation, which are worthwhile if only to see how ably I am embodying the potbellied geek tradition.

Nice landscape pics. Get alittle more sun, that will fool alot of people into thinkin you are not a geek.
But seriously, where are you vacationing?
edit: Or more accurately where is Maggie Valley?

Very pretty - nice photos, Chris. (I haven't ever finished uploading my vacation photos yet - it takes more effort than I've felt like putting forth lately).
The area you show is one that I would like to visit someday. I usually vacation western U.S. and have not seen very many states East.

West of Asheville, north of the Blue Ridge Parkway, east of the Cherokee reservation. Just off 276 where it hits 19-23. Our cabin was here.
And sun doesn't help. I've lived in central Florida for 40 years, no luck yet. I redden, I peel, I remain ghostlike in appearance.

This also the farthest west I've ever been, narrowly edging out St. Petersburg.

Oh my, Chris! How can you possibly be a well-rounded columnist if you've never been west of the Mississippi?

heh, my best friend is the same way. Any chance you are scandinavian by heritage?

I have no clue: I'm adopted. Which has the unexpected advantage of making racial bigotry even more senseless than usual for me than it already is since I wouldn't know which races to despise.
What I am is a poor columnist, FG. When we looked around for vacation spots Teres actually found a killer deal on airfare to San Fransisco, a city I've always wanted to visit, but we realized that meals and accomodations would kill us. The NC vacation, including cabin, rental car, airfare, and meals, ran under $1,000.

I love NC, it's one of our favorite vacations. Probably because it's the closest mountains.

Beautiful! There is nothing like the sound of creeks and wind rushing through the trees. I can hear it from here . . . *smiles wistfully*
