So...

Something I've been wanting to do for awhile (I think BlackBlade tried something like this a few months back) is to give a Hatrack community quiz, with the intent of creating a Hatrack social map. I did something a little similar with the belief quiz statistics thread last year, but I want to do it better, with a quiz that is more tailored to the interests of Hatrack users.

So, towards that goal, I've created a ten question quiz. For each question please put the options in the order indicated in the question. Do a full ranking, even if you're not very familiar with some of the options. Please don't read this thread and then do the quiz, as that will destroy the independence necessary for it to be effective. When responding to the quiz, please format the responses like this (spaces don't matter, but punction does):

1) a,b,c,d,e
2) c,b,a,e,d
3) b,d,e,a,c
...

Use "a" for the first option listed, "b" for the second, "c" for the third, etc. rather than actually using the options. This will significantly help me with data entry and ingest for my analysis. Any comments you want to make, clarifications, etc. should be made after the block of answers, or in a separate post.

Again, if you want to be part of the quiz, please take it before you read the rest of this thread, so as to keep all responses independent.

Without further ado, my Hatrack quiz:

comments: not being the SF afficianado that I should be, #2 was answered purely on name recognition, as I haven't read anything by any of them. "County" in #4 is very vague. I do really like some country, which would put it as my favorite, but I abhore contemporary country, and that's usually what people mean when they say "country". Do you mean contemporary, or an average of all country genres?

Posted by SenojRetep (Member # 8614) on :

I debated making it "classic country" to cut what I'd call the Rascal Flats chaff, but I didn't want to make it more specific than the other genres. Honestly, I think the most generic is "orchestral" which would include Mozart, John Williams, Philip Glass and Aaron Copeland.

Posted by vonk (Member # 9027) on :

That's probably true, but I'm not as familiar with orchestral music. But the point is to get a general mapping of hatrack's opinions, not individual's tastes in music, so nevermind. On another note, I learned last night that Bach's music is actually* the result of some unethical space/time manipulation and alien file sharing.

And I debated including Adams vs. Madison for a long time, decided on Adams, and then forgot and put Madison on in the end. So, I agree. On the other hand, he and Hamilton had a lot of the same characteristics, and my intent was to get a spread of individuals, so maybe it's better with Madison. I don't know.

Notes: For number two I haven't read anything by any of them. (I'm bad, I know.) For number six I would never watch any of those shows ever. I'm more of a Top Chef, Project Runway person. And I am woefully ignorant when it comes to American history, so my choices for number ten are pretty arbitrary. Oh, and an explanation for myspace: I have a lot of friends that live across the country and it is the easiest and most convenient way to keep in closer contact with them.

Again, missing data is problematic. It'll be a hassle if you don't completely answer, even if your answers are somewhat arbitrary. If you don't, I'll do my best to interpolate data for your response, but it'll be a hassle.

For number 10, I interpreted "important" as having had the most influence, be it good or bad. If you meant influencial only in a good way, I'd need to change my answer.

Senoj: if you really prefer arbitrary data to no data, then just pick the letters out of a hat yourself and use that for my answer. It'll have the same effect.

Huh. I would have put Hamilton dead last if the question had been which of them was the most important in a good way. Down with Hamilton!

My biggest surprise was that the music question didn't list rock and roll.

Agreed. I ended up construing "R&B" broadly enough to encompass much of the genre.

I intentionally left Rock & Roll off the music list. I was trying for divisive options (they're better for discrimination), and I figured Rock & Roll would have too much of a consensus. But maybe I underestimate the diversity of Hatrack.

**I assumed "country" didn't just include modern pop-country but classic country and bluegrass, that R&B ONLY included modern R&B, not "R&B oldies", and also it depends on my mood.

^ But I would only watch any of them under duress

^^But it depends on the family [Razz]

That's my intent. Early versions are uninteresting; hopefully with more responses we'll see more structure popping out. Right now, I'm just seeing sort of uniform spread across the space.

I wonder if once you complete this chart you can superimpose it on the earlier religion chart and see if any patterns emerge? Or would any patterns be completely irrelivent?

He'd be better company than Hamilton, who I'm quite sure is down there as well, and has probably tried to usurp the devil's throne more than once.

HA! Even I could not help but laugh at that.

That's not really Hamilton's style. He'd position himself into some sort of position like Aide-de-camp and the position would not have any official power. He would then simply influence the devil with his ideas and make hell run far more efficiently, well at least its fiscal policy would be greatly improved.

Aaron Burr would whine about how he does not deserve to be in hell all while figuring out a way to split the kingdom in two.

Frankly I think 10 should have swapped out Ben Franklin for John Adams, who I would have probably put first or second, the man was absolutely irreplaceable (amen to you Blackblade!). Madison was instrumental in the formation of the Constitution, he couldn’t have been done away with. Adams and Jefferson likewise were instrumental. I think we would have been fine without Franklin, he smoothed over some rough edges. Washington’s efforts during the war probably could have been achieved with near success by a different general, it was more his actions as president that I’d find impressive for the sake of national formation. Hamilton’s railing in the Federalist papers was also very important to the formation of the Federal government as we know it today. Hard to rank them except to put Franklin last.

Two I totally made up, I've never read anything by any of them. I've only seen a couple episodes of a couple of those reality tv shows, so I guess on that one too.

And Firefly seemed a bit odd to have next to those really big series' of movies. I know it's really popular on this board, and it's really good, but following that criteria, Battlestar Galactica should be on there too. If you replace LOTR with it, then they'd all be sci-fi too. But Firefly seems like the abberration, it's a half finished tv show, not a bit series of movies like the other ones are. Shouldn't something like Rocky be in there? Another big multimovie series I mean.

Just an update:

I have everybody's answers to date in a map form, but I'm not very satisfied with it. I guess I asked the wrong set of questions, or we simply have too eclectic of a group, but there's really no structure in the dataset that's representable in 2D format. I'll still upload the map, like I did with the belief quiz, as well as report some of the more interesting statistics, but so far the results aren't all that interesting. I'm thinking about trying a different approach to see if it yeilds better results.

You can expect a map (for better or worse) sometime this afternoon.

If you want some ideas for questions here is the thread I created.

And I figured out why it didn't pan out. I appears I stopped working on my survey. But after looking at the timestamp date I think I recall having a legitimate reason for stopping.

So, as promised, I have uploaded the map.

You can look at it here.

It's really not that indicative, though. The closer to the edges you are, the more representative of actual distances in "interest space," and there are a few fairly invariant groups (like me, Kama, AvidReader and Shawshank), but by in large the answer sets were simply too diverse to represent well in a 2D map. The most egregious is xnera, who in the 2D projection appears to be closest to Farmgirl, but in the actual space is closer to every single other person.

For reference, I've included below a "closest and furthest" for each respondent, along with values so that people can get a general feel for relative differences and distances. If anyone's interested in a complete listing of their distances from other respondents, email me and I'll send it to you.

Maybe after the weekend I'll play with some other options for 2D approximations that might give a more satisfactory result. We'll see. Thanks everyone for responding.

Over the weekend I figured the most obvious thing to do with all these responses was to tabulate it as a vote.

So, I did so, and the results can be seen here.

I'll post the winning ranking for each question (although most of them have a good enough spread to just read it off the graph), and I'll also post which respondent most closely agreed with the winning ranking. I will then declare that person "Hatrack President." I will also list the "least-agreeable" person and declare them leader of the opposition.

Yep. It's worth noting that this makes Peter the Secretary of Homeland Security (assuming that Leonide and I share the role of Speaker of the House, of course).

Just a note on methodology (for Farmgirl and others).

I essentially assigned a value 1-5 to each respondent's choices. So if you ranked Ender as your favorite Enderverse character, he would get 5 points. If you ranked Peter as your least favorite he would get 1 point. Then I just summed over all the options.

The bar charts in the linked chart are the percentages of total points each option got. So for the Enderverse question, Ender got 29% of the total points and Peter got 13.5%

Then I used the point total to create consensus orders for each question (Ender first, then Bean, then Petra, then Alai, then Peter). I then calculated the Euclidean distance between those orderings and the 32 respondents. BlackBlade had the "closest" responses, indicated by his low total "distance."

Hope that helps a little.

P.S. I'll add the new respondents and recalculate a little later.

question/concern on your methodology:

I'm not sure if I'm understanding you correctly, but it would seem that that kind of arbitrary numbering system would be effectively meaningless for comparison purposes. Unless all As are supposed to be related, all Bs etc then it doesn't seem to really tell anything.

I'm trying to explain my issue with it, but I think I'm just too confused, so perhaps you can clarify more.

Why, I'd be thrilled to play second fiddle to BlackBlade. Cool.

Posted by Lyrhawn (Member # 7039) on :

Well if we're doing it that way, we might as well establish the Hatrack Cabinet:

BlackBlade, President
ClaudiaTherese, Vice President
Leonide, Speaker of the House
Noemon, President pro tempore of the Senate
vonk, Secretary of State
Jhai, Secretary of the Treasury
Carrie, Secretary of Defense
FlyingCow, Attorney General (though really, that should be Dag)
JumboWumbo, Secretary of the Interior
Mike, Secretary of Agriculture
Zevlag, Secretary of Commerce
Luet13, Secretary of Labor
xnera, Secretary of HHS
Qaz, Secretary of HUD
Lyrhawn, Secretary of Transportation (yay!)
SenojRetep, Secretary of Energy
PrimalCurve, Sectretary of Education
TL, Secretary of Veterans' Affairs
EduardoStElmo, Secretary of Homeland Security.

Now that's using the US Presidential line of succession, assuming we won't disallow US born members.

I only compare "A"s and "B"s within the context of a single question.

So, for instance, if on the first question you responded "1) c,b,d,a,e" (which you did) and the Hatrack consensus was "1) c,a,d,b,e" (which it was) your distance from the consensus would be the square root of the sum of the squared difference of each individual ranking, i.e. the difference between your "A" rank, and Hatrack's, plus the difference between your "B" rank and Hatrack's, plus... In this case it would work out to:
sqrt((2-4)^2+(4-2)^2+(5-5)^2+(3-3)^2+(1-1)^2) = sqrt(8) = 2.83.
I then sum the individual distances over all 10 questions to get a total distance.

There is something wrong (or, at least, undesirable) about this methodology, and that is that by assigning a value 1-5 to each ranking I'm assuming a strength of preference. Additionally, by weighting each question equally, I'm not taking into account that some questions are more or less meaningful to individuals or the community.

To address the first, I could use a non-Euclidean distance measure (such as Spearman's correlation coefficient; I'd link the wikipedia entry, but Hatrack isn't liking it for some reason). This is problematic for the purposes of the 2D projection I've been using, which requires the distance metric to have certain Euclidean-like properties. However, since the projection wasn't working well anyway...

To address the second, I could have had each respondent indicate how strongly they felt about each question, and use that to weight the distances. However, I felt that would unnecessarily complicate the survey.

Honestly, I could go on about this stuff for hours, but I've probably already bored everyone to tears.

What?! I've been booted from office? Well, it's a good thing I left that super-virus in the Hatrack Federal Servers that'll begin circulation as soon as I don't input the secret code at the end of the day.

Also, something in the office has been in the toilet.

Sweet- me and Claudia are tight.

Well, vonk. It seems you'd be Secretary of Agriculture... which, by name alone, seems more up my alley. I'll gladly swap with ya. [Big Grin]

Wouldn't want any viral happenings, anyway. And, by any chance, was it the toilet brush in the toilet?

BlackBlade, President
LaunchyWiggin, Vice President
Noemon, Speaker of the House (big promotion considering the President pro temp is more of an honorific than a real powerhouse)
ClaudiaTherese, President pro tempore of the Senate
FlyingCow, Secretary of State
Jhai, Secretary of the Treasury (so far you and Blackblade are the only ones to survive the shuffle in your original spots)
TheGrimace, Secretary of Defense
Carrie, Attorney General
vonk, Secretary of the Interior
Zevlag, Secretary of Agriculture
Mike, Secretary of Commerce
Qaz, Secretary of Labor
JumboWumbo, Secretary of HHS
Primal Curve, Secretary of HUD
Luet13, Secretary of Transportation (ack! I was replaced!)
SenojRetep, Secretary of Energy
xnera, Sectretary of Education
Lyrhawn, Secretary of Veterans' Affairs (whew, I survived)
TomDavidson, Secretary of Homeland Security.

There's the new Government, I fixed it according to the new list.

From Speaker of the House to non-existence.

Is that what happened to Newt?

ClaudiaTherese was the best vice president I ever had! [Cry] You have BIG shoes to fill LaunchyWiggin.

FlyingCow it falls to you to establish diplomatic relations with Ornery and SakeRiver.

edit: Also I am positive that Tom will find VERY radical ways to keep our borders secure.

Lyrhawn bumped you out, Leonide. That's politics the American way.

You should be sandwiched between Carrie and TheGrimace, making you Attorney General (and me Secretary of Education, which is ironic since I ranked education as least important on question five).

I guess I'm a staffer for a low-level Freshman member of the House of Representatives.

[Smile] Given what I'm studying, it's particularly appropriate that I'm Secretary of the Treasury. As my first act in office I'll start minting those Hatrack commemorative quarters I know we've all been lusting after. Shall we have dobie, so*, or onanism first?

Oh, and welcome to Hatrack, Santa34
