I apologize for this, but I've reached the limits of my own (very limited) abilities and so before I try and get tech support from my provider, I'd thought I'd try here. At the very least, someone may be able to help me know what to ask.
Basic problem: I recently moved and now have DSL through Embarq. I can't get it to play nice with my ADSL modem and/or DLink router.
Prior set up:
DSL from SBC/Yahoo! (now AT&T) --> phone jack --> jack that provides two phone jacks --> filters in each jack --> phone line into Speedstream 5100-b DSL modem --> ethernet cable to DLink router --> ethernet cable from router to iMac running OS 8.6 [configured to DHCP].
As I recall, the modem did not need any configuration; the DLink router was configured to the IP address of the DSL modem. And because I have such an old iMac, I configured the DLink router with a PC running Windows XP because I needed a browser that would do a Java login pop up.
I have tried to do the same set up with my current DSL service (Embarq). It didn't work. Or rather here's what happens -- the DSL, Ethernet and Power lights on the modem all light up, but the Internet one doesn't.
I tried going in to the modem and seeing how I could reconfigure it. There's a test you can run -- Ethernet, ADSL and ATM all test out as fine. It fails at the PPPoE stage. The modem is set to PPP. I tried other options (can't remember them, but they all failed).
Any suggestions? The tricky thing is that I need to configure with a PC (I have a work laptop I can use), but I'm pretty sure I have to eventually go through the router in order to get it to work with the iMac (and I'd prefer that so that I can plug my laptop on the few dayswhen I bring it home from work)
I have not played with the router because a) I've forgotten the login and password for it and searching for it will be hard because we just moved and b) I think that the router only connects to the ip address of the modem and that hasn't changed.
Embarq says that the Speedstream DSL modem should work.
The only thing I can figure out is that the modem required some sort of authentication with SBCYahoo! i.e. a login and password. If that is indeed the case, is there a way around that? Or alternately, what do I need to ask Embarq for?

That may be a problem, the dsl line, the one going to the modem, shouldn't have a filter. But if as you say the DSL light is coming on, it should be ok.
The internet light is to indicate that PPP(oE or oA) is logged in, with a username and password. I don't know if embarq requires this or not. You can just try changing it to dhcp instead of PPP. If this doesn't work you will need to find out your U/P.

What are the colors of the lights, and are they solid or blinking?
Also, if they said exactly the same modem as you had for SBC would work, and the DSL light is solid, you almost certainly need to use PPPoE, because Embarq is probably just piggybacking on AT&T's DSLAMs.

What model of D-Link router are you using? In most setups involving a router between the modem and the PC, it should be the router that handles the PPPoE stuff. Check the router's configuration pages to see if you can tell it to establish the PPPoE connection.
For example: in my house, we have a DSL modem connected by Ethernet to our Linksys router. The router stores the PPPoE logon information, so that it can re-establish the connection without intervention from our PCs. Our PCs connect to the router and use DHCP. None of the PCs need to have any ISP-specific software or settings.
Also, why is the iMac still running OS 8.6? I can maybe understand not using OS X, but what was wrong with OS 9?

That is also another option that NotMe has brought up. You can set the modem to be in bridge mode. And then have the Router handle the PPP connection. Either way, you need to know the Username and password.

At least with the 5100 there's no need (or ability ) to set the modem to bridge mode. Its a dumb modem, with no routing capabilities.
You need to get into the router and change the username and password from your SBC one (the username is almost certainly blah@sbcglobal.net or something like that) to the Embarq one. If you are unable to do this, you can test it by plugging a computer directly into the 5100, then configuring a PPPoE connection on the computer.
Note that you will still need to get into the router in order to configure it to connect with the 5100.

Awesome. Thanks everybody. I already had on my list to get an Embarq username and password and to track down how to log in to the router, but this helps me with what to do once I have that info.
I'm at work, but I believe that the router I have is the D-Link DI-604 -- or perhaps one generation before it (it's three years old).
NotMe: That's a fantastic question. I just never bothered to buy OS 9 or bum it off a friend and kept meaning to get a new computer, but had to put it off several times as unexpected expenses arose. I do think I'll be able to swing a new computer this fall, though.
