Is it possible to mess up your back really bad just by sitting improperly? I've been working long hours editing videos, and creating graphics, and I'm wondering if that's how it got so messed up!

It's 12:34AM, I am in a fair amount of pain, and I can't seem to find a position that doesn't start hurting after 30 seconds!

I'm setting up a chiropractic appt asap, but I was just wondering if anybody else has had an experience like this?

I suppose that bad posture while working could cause back pains, but I don't really know enough about the subject to comment. Be careful with the chiropractor, though. While there are some good ones out there, it isn't exactly the best regulated profession in the world. There is definitely a lot of quackery if you aren't careful.

It happened to me about 2 months ago now. Everything seemed like a normal day at work, but after about a half hour. . . . excruciating pain.

My chiropracter thinks I got a bulged disk from bad posture, and it's causing sciatica. Not becuz I threw it out, just. . . bad posture.

I'm a lot better now. Not 100%, but getting there. Improved posture plus all the chiropractic adjustments. . . .it's been slow, but such is life.

How are your other resting positions? How is your abdominal muscle tone?

It may be resulting from not only your sitting position, but your standing and sleeping positions as well. I had back problems, and I found a great (non-quack) chiropractor who showed me how sleeping on my stomach with my arms up under my pillow was straining my back. He recommended some other sleeping positions, including on my side with a pillow between my knees, which has helped with morning pain. I had to get a new mattress, too. In addition, he pointed out to me that my standing position was out of alignment because when I was standing straight up my arms were falling just in front of my hips instead of along my sides. I've been working on standing with my shoulders back and my head lifted. He gave me excercises that really helped--a lot of them were abdominal strengtheners and yoga-like stretches.

You may also consider asking your chiropractor to recommend a better desk chair, since you work such long hours in it.

Good luck and hope you heal soon!

Recently, all of my positions are painful. The one that's least painful is lying on my back with my hands underneath my lower back/hip area. I'm interested that you mention quack chiropractors, I'll have to double check mine. [Smile]

Thanks everyone!

YES! Especially if your back and stomach muscles are not in good shape.

Ever since I've been doing Yoga to tone my back and stomach muscles I've been enjoying less problems sitting.

Also my back injury has also not been as much of a problem either.

We haven't been able to afford one of those good office chairs rated for eight hours, so I mess mine up when I'm at the computer too long. Getting up every half hour seems to help.

This can make a HUGE difference pretty quickly. It's one of the things they talked about when I was in physical therapy.
