Nobody seems to have created such a thread and so since I am a loser and found time amidst the festivities to feed my addictions and get on hatrack I decided to post the thread myself!

Happy Fourth of July folks! I truly believe this country is one worth celebrating. Hope you all have a wonderful holiday, I'm glad to share the country with all of you.

[Party]

But most of all be safe, fireworks are serious business.
[No No]

Seriously not even kidding, my uncle almost set the field adjacent to his house ablaze with a malfunctioning firework.
[No No] [No No]

I started my morning by baking Hello Dollies while watching and singing along to 1776.

Then BBQ with the boyfriend and his family.

Later, my neighbor and his thousands of dollars worth of fireworks will be setting off a show across the street to rival many professional productions.

We went up on our second floor porch. First we watched MGM's fireworks, the we caught a glimpse of Epcot's, and then we saw our own. Our own display was so long that by the end you could hardly see the fireworks from all the smoke. We kept seeing bursts where the bottom half was obscured. And the smell of smoke! Still, I think it was enough to beat off those Brits. [Wink]

The mosquitoes, on the other hand, seem to be tonight's big victors.

Hello Dollies! ::drool:: and 1776, too.
Shanna, could we possibly be kindred spirits?

On a totally opposite and slightly disgusted note, the hoped-for bagpipe band did not appear in the town parade this morning! In fact, the parade lasted all of 10 minutes and involved NO THROWING OF CANDY! Many local children were downcast. OK, me too.

Shall we hang some Tories before the day is through?

Somewhat funny story.

When I was 19 and in the Army, we had 150 Welsh troops come over for training. I was assigned to them as their medic. Having never been outside the country (I still haven't), I asked them what holidays they celebrate. I went through the list:

me: Do you celebrate Christmas?
them: Sure
me: Halloween?
them: yes
me: 4th of July?
them: no, we lost that war
me: [Blushing]
them: [Laugh]

I also got embarrassed when they offered me a fag. I had to tell them we don't do that in the US Army (this was even before don't ask, don't tell).

Funny Brits

most surreal 4th ever was as follows:

I was visiting England where my brother worked at an American air force base. The celebration was about 95% brits getting all into western-themed quick draw contests etc while my brain was screaming: "you're celebrating our independance from YOU!" but it was a blast [Smile]

This year for our bonding family activity, my brother suggested that we go around the table and finish the sentence "I'm glad I'm not British because..."

My favorite was "...they don't celebrate the 4th of July."

My family have always celebrated July 4th, but only because it's my Sisters birthday. The truth is I've never really thought about the whys and the wherefores of "Independance Day".

Hoorah for hanging Tories though, right behind you there.... [Wink]

Well, I am scottish so I am genetically opposed to them.

Sorry to disappoint, but since the act of union in 1707 Scotland has formed an integral and highly valued part of the United Kingdom of Great Britain, hence the Saltire (the cross of St. Andrews and the blue background) on the Union flag.

Thus, the Scots, while Scottish are also British.

As the saying goes, "British by birth, Scots* by the grace of God".

* Or Welsh, or English or Ulsterman or Manx etc. depending on your audience, take care tho... [Wink]

I love the british accents. And the different words you guys use:

Cheers
Bloody
Invalid Carrier (heard that one on Last Comic Standing)

Ya'll are so cheeky.

It was kinda ironic being in Hong Kong during the handover. Here I was an American who celebrates having a country with its own elected government, but annoyed when Hong Kong was about to cease to be a British colony and rejoin its mother country.

Most of my fears were unfounded, but I am not entirely happy with how things are in Hong Kong.

Ah, but the family lineage that I have was attacked and persecuted until they left in the early 1800s.
