Since the main film itself has been confirmed as a "re-imagined prequel" of sorts to TOS era Star Trek, there are several ways "Old Spock" could turn up.

In the Star Trek: The Next Generation film Generations, Kirk was lost (and presumed dead) when the newest USS Enterprise (NCC-1701-B) was damaged by the Nexus, which he entered. In books written by William Shatner, beginning with Star Trek: The Return, Captain Kirk is brought back to life from alien technology.

Hmmm. I think the official line at Paramount about the events that happen in the novels is that (unless otherwise stated) they take place in the various alternate ST universes. You know, like the Mirror Universe, or the one where Worf and Troi are married. Posted by rivka (Member # 4859) on :

Somehow we manage to get Ursula LeQuin, Studio Ghibli, Gaston, Kimba, and the Simpsons all in the space of 5 posts.
Perhaps Disney movies are the core of unified field theory, it's just nobody thought to look there!
