I know we've had a thread along these lines before, but I just got an email that's caused me to wonder about etiquette again. My sister's getting married next week and I just received an email inviting me to the groom's bachelor party. Now, my brother and I are technically groomsmen, hence why we got the invitation, but still, this just seems odd to me.

So the question is (and as I'm typing this, I think I know the answer) as the brother of the bride, is it expected of me to attend the Bachelor Pary?

I don't know about expected, but it's quite common for men from the bride's side to be invited to the bachelor party, even if they aren't friends with the groom.

I don't know why you wouldn't - I would assume that all bridesmaids, including the groom's sisters if he had any, would be invited to the bachelorette party.

If it might be sticky because the groom may be cavorting with strippers and the bride's brothers would be compelled to say something, then there are much bigger issues here.

^^ This was my understanding as well.

Were my sister getting married, I'd be somewhat offended if I wasn't invited to the bachelor party.

I'd say while it makes sense for you to be invited, it may be quite reasonable for you to decline (depending on the nature of the event)... though while you may not be his friend yet, he is going to be family, so it makes sense to want to get to know him better.

That particular part of the Party I will be abstaining from. [Smile]

At any rate, thanks for you help everyone. I've never been an actual part of a wedding before, so I don't really know all the ins and outs of the whole thing.

I'd go. It's a great chance to hang out with your future brother in law. Hopefully, he'll be super cool, and you'll get to know him better. If you find out that he's secretly a drug runner or during the party he kills a prostitute and buries her in the desert, you can warn your sister off.

Win-win.
