I am looking for a mp3 player on my computer which will let me adjust the playing speed, so that you can listen to the files at, say, 1.5x speed.
Anybody know of a free program which will do this?

Goldwave will, but I'm not sure how restricted the trial version is. It's also not a player so much as an editor, so I'm sure that's much more than you're looking for.

Goldwave's trial version isn't limited, but it becomes disabled after a certain number of commands.

I think Audacity will let you do that. Audacity tends to crash on me a lot, though.

I'm actually using audacity for that right now, but it's really klunky. You have to first convert the entire file, which means it takes a minute or so any time you want to switch speeds.

Don't know which audio player you're using, but Winamp has lots of plugins which will do what you need. I found these:
There are probably many more.

I'm almost positive that you can do this with windows media player classic.

Wavepad.

In Windows Media Player, click "Now Playing," then "Enhancements." You'll see a "Variable Speed Settings" which will allow you to change the playback speed.
