Thanks, Hatrack.

So I was eating dinner with some teenagers last night (I'm in my early 30s) and our discussion segued from impassioned HP7 predictions to books in general. The kids were suprised that I a) cared very very very much about what was going to happen in the next book; and b) had read His Dark Materials (what kind of grownups do they know??? [Smile] ). They were even more impressed when I recommended EG to them (they'd already read it & loved it).

But what really clinched it was this. One of the guys said he likes EG the novel, but also loves EG the novella because of its memorable first line, "The enemy's gate is down." Which reminded me of this thread, so I said, "Oh, do you read that comic...uh...xkcd?"

Their eyes bugged. I was informed that my coolness factor had gone up tremendously. I felt smug.

So thanks, Hatrack! [Wink]

I constantly get coolness points for things I learned on hatrack. [Smile]

Who gives those out? I am seriously behind, I think.... [Wink]

I've been known to deal out coolness points. I have a permit.

I've definitely gotten coolness points for knowing about things I discovered on Hatrack. xkcd is one of them. OK, maybe the only one. Once. Hmm.

I spark huge conversations with the stuff I learn about on this forum, i'm not surprised. I'm proud to be involved with the jatraquerian society.

I got busted once for dealing black market coolness, and now I have to wear an ankle bracelet.

Steve told me "get a permit, get a permit" but I figured it'd be too much of a hassle. Goes to show what I know.

Just remember, friends don't let friends peddle black market coolness.

Given that we're discussing Harry Potter, Ender's Game, and one of the nerdiest webcomics in the world, perhaps "coolness" isn't the word here...? [Wink]

Help me out, guys, so I don't blow what little cool I've got. How, exactly, do I pronounce "xkcd"?

"ecks - kay - see -dee" is how I've always said it... [Big Grin]
Oh, and for those of you without coolness permits, I happen to be the Arbiter of Cool, so if you want a permit, now is a good time to ask.

I keep reading this post over and over, trying to figure out what it could possibly mean... [Wink]

What Tom is saying is Nerd is the new Cool.

1. Teenagers give out cool points. (duh)
2. As a grownup, you get coolness points simply by being an atypical grownup. For example, had I offered one of the kids a dollar to drink a bottle of ketchup, that would also have been cool. [Wink]

My girls at camp were amazed I know Homestar Runner and StrongBad. That is Hatrack's fault.
