I'm really excited about this and want to share with all of you Hatrackers.

Two weeks ago, I interviewed for the director of bands position at a school in the town I grew up. And not just any school, but the one I used to attend. It's great to be able to live back in a town that really feels like home and working with families I know and colleagues who were once teachers of mine, all of whom have been incredibly welcoming.

Not only that, but my wife also got her first teaching job (also as a band director) in a nearby school. We will no longer each have a 30+ minute commute.

Life is good.

Man cutting out the commute feels so good do'nit?

How many bands/groups exist in the school? Will you be forming any new ones?

Congratulations to you and Mrs. BandoCommando!

My school will have two classes each for 6th and 7th graders (divided into a woodwind and a brass class) and one combined class for 8th graders. There is also a jazz band in the daily schedule (as opposed to before/after school), so that is nice. I plan to open up a fifth grade program at the elementary schools as soon as I can.

Not sure what my wife's schedule will be yet.

Congrats on the job! I've known alot of people who have gone onto teach at their old schools and they love it. Especially in close communities.

Wow - that's very cool. Congrats.

You will begin to feel old when the offspring of your fellow classmates (from when you went there) are your students. And then maybe their grandchildren.... [Smile]

(yeah, our band director was there like 30 years, and saw a couple of generations)

That is great. I loved band in school. It's what motivated me to keep my grades up.

I should also add that I'm excited that my new administration sounds incredibly supportive of the performing arts. My school's program already has 300+ kids involved in band on a yearly basis, and they want to see this continue to thrive.

I do have some challenges to overcome, however (but that's where the fun comes in!), such as dealing with the antiquated and broken down inventory of school-owned instruments, updating the library, etc., all of which means one thing: fundraising.

But, it will be fun.

There is absolutely nothing so wonderful for a teacher as a supportive administration. [Smile]
