I was going to put this one in the Green News thread, but I thought it might be a fun story for everyone instead.

Scientists explain that the foam is created by impurities in the ocean, such as salts, chemicals, dead plants, decomposed fish and excretions from seaweed.
Delicious! And fun to swim in as well.

Cool! I hadn't even heard about it.

That is disgusting. You see small amounts of that foam along the gulf shores (and I assume most others) somewhat frequently, and never do we play in it or rub it on our bodies. Gross.

I'm with vonk-- eeew. I would NEVER play in that. I can barely bring myself to wade on a day when the ocean is relatively clean if that foam is around.

Meh, I'd romp through it. You could do some killer Marco Polo in that stuff.

Too bad it probably stinks like hell.

It is too weird weird and uncommon to NOT romp around in, i think. i mean, as long as it doesn't burn your skin or melt your eyeballs, i bet it would be a cool experience.

I'm having trouble believing this isn't a hoax. Google News only turns up two or three references to it; you'd think it would be all over the news.

I guess there are more important things on people's minds in this country, momentous things such as Craig's Lust.

I'm not super surprised. It's the kind of story you see at the end of the news after the murders and robberies, just before the puppies being saved from a burning building.

In other words, not headline news.

"Foam" isn't exactly a buzz word.

We had an incidence of this back in about '78 - I was four at the time and remember running along the beach and *poof!* straight through a massive pile of foam.

Parents had no idea where I was... it was great.

But then, at four, you don't care too much about smell....

That's so cool! I wish I had been in Sydney when that happened. It would of been awesome.

Also, I'm definitely in the "romping" category. If I'm there when it happens again, I'll be playing in that stuff like no one's business!

It's not a hoax.

I've seen foam like that on a much, much smaller scale in the river (and it smelt pretty darn bad - but I suspect it would smell worse in a river system than in the ocean).

And I would totally play in it. Smell schmell. I think it would be great! (But then, I have a fairly low squickiness factor.)

How could I not have heard about that?? I live three hours from Sydney. I'm amazed it didn't end up in an email going around work.
