Maybe I'll finally be tempted to buy one of these things?

This has to be the real reason for the otherwise pointless iphone - to generate free advertising for the next gen ipod.

Jobs is a genius afterall.

This is about right timing for me, so I'm hoping it's something I like but I can still spend about the same ammount of money.

I think I heard somewhere they're introducing a redesigned I-pod nano, possibly with video.

That's quite possible too.

K stuff is starting to show up. I don't see any differences in the new shuffle other than color. The nano is now 4 or 8gb for the same prices and has video. The ipod classic is bigger 80 or 160gb, don't see many other big differences. The ipod touch looks to be an iPhone without a phone $299 for 8gb.

I think they should have more memory in the Ipod touch.

Why, when they can give you 8/16 now and milk you for another $300 in a year when they release the 30 or whatever?

It's the same as the iPhone. I have less intrest in it than the iPhone. I would be in love with the new nanos but they look bubbly.

Can someone explain to me how this works:

Nano

8GB Up to 2,000 songs, up to 7,000 photos, up to 8 hours of video, or some of each

Touch

8GB Up to 1,750 songs, up to 10,000 photos, up to 10 hours of video, or some of each

Now, I can imagine there being a difference because of required memory for the system, but why different for each type of media?

The number of songs/photos/video is highly variable. My guess is that they are targeting the Touch at a "higher end" customer who they believe will prefer higher-quality audio and video which tends to take more space.

Posted by erosomniac (Member # 6834) on :

Except the numbers quoted would indicate higher quality audio, but lower quality photos and video.

Oops, my bad. It's still not necessarily incompatible with targeted marketing. The targets are just no longer obvious to me. Perhaps as a video-focused device they think the Touch will sell better if it is spec'd for more hours of video. Maybe the competition is also spec'd at 10 hours.

There isn't more memory in the Touch for practical reasons; it uses flash memory. Making the sizes larger would drive the price a lot higher.

But the iPhone dropped by $200? Anyone here stand in line for three days a few months ago to buy it at the full price? How do you feel about this?

Posted by Steev (Member # 6805) on :

I got my 5th gen ipod mainly for videos so a bigger screen ipod is of no use to me unless it can hold at least 80gb. I would love to see if I could get one of those 160gb ipods. That would be all I ever need. However, as long as they use hard drives they will fail within 6 months guaranteed costing you $30 to get it replaced and that is with the warranty. After the warranty is out I'm going to buy my own HD for $50 and put them in myself.

Apparently the business world wasn't too impressed by these things. Apple's stock fell $7 and the DOW took a 140 point hit.

And frankly, why would they be? The Nano has more functionality now, that's niceee, though I'm not sure how I feel about the design, but the Touch and the iPhone are dumb.

After the price drop, the Phone and the Touch have the same amount of memory and cost the same amount as well, except the Touch doesn't make phone calls.

I imagine in a few years they'll be able to cram a lot more flash memory in there. Flash memory is expensive at the moment, but prices are dropping significantly, as well as the size of the unit whilst the amount of space they can hold is increasing, as well as the number of write cycles, which for an MP3 player I think they're already above the number that could ever be needed over the life of the product. But for now, with the size of media out there and the size of files being sold, that's far too small for the money.

The Touch is either an insanely overpriced functional MP3 player, or a perfectly priced status symbol.

The Apple stock price thing is likely more influenced by NBC's move away from the iTMS.

The Touch does a heck of a lot more than play music. It has a WiFi connection to browse the web, check email, et cetera.

The WiFi connection and bigger screen just isn't worth 1/10th the memory and $50 more.

Stupid of the stock market -- nobody gets iPods so they can pay for expensive, DRMed, low-resolution episodes of The Office. If anyone suffers for this, it'll be NBC -- though I can't believe iTunes television shows are popular enough for it to matter one way or the other.

The WiFi is really, really exciting, though. If there's anything in the world that could make municipal WiFi a reality, it's legions of spoiled weenies.

Also, I'm guessing the price drop on the iPhone is due to some sort of agreement Apple signed with AT&T to not cannibalize the iPhone with a lower-priced iPod equivalent.

So they dropped the price on the iPhone to match the iPod rather than, as AT&T probably expected, the other way around. I don't think I've ever seen a ballsier move by a major company, good lord.

Wait, I didn't see the $200 dollar price drop on the iPhone, damn, that's just mean. I have a friend who was obsessed with getting an iPhone as soon as it came out, and now he's pretty much been butt raped by apple.

Posted by erosomniac (Member # 6834) on :

Yeah, the iPhone price drop does seem an awful lot like Apple's saying "To the customers who supported the launch of our product despite myriad criticisms: screw you. Please don't buy any more of our products."

Or does it just read that way to me?

Posted by breyerchic04 (Member # 6423) on :

It does read a bit like that. But I wouldn't have bought something that fast, maybe I'm wimpy but I want to wait and see what the quirks are. I'll probably get a nano around christmas, now to decide what color.

Posted by rollainm (Member # 8318) on :

That's not wimpy. It's smart

Posted by breyerchic04 (Member # 6423) on :

Thanks. I'm not sure if ipods really fix their quirks in that way, but I figure why not wait.

So what color?

Posted by MEC (Member # 2968) on :

I always like the black, white takes second. The other colors are just too...pastel.

Posted by Lyrhawn (Member # 7039) on :

Should really boost sales around Easter though.

I always get so excited watching Apple keynote because I'm a bit of a fanboy, but I was doing a whole lot of [Wall Bash] [Wall Bash] [Wall Bash] when I saw the price drop.

It's definitely hurting Apple's most loyal customers, I'm not about to stop buying their stuff, but I'm going to think twice before doing it right away.

Posted by breyerchic04 (Member # 6423) on :

I'm not sure I'll like the black being so matte, I may go with the "red" which doesn't seem very red to me, but my dad buys "porche red" paint.

Go with whatever color hides scratches best....those things take a beating >_<

Posted by breyerchic04 (Member # 6423) on :

Thanks, though I figure it'll take a while to find that out, and for new nano sleeves to show up at the dollar store.

Apparently a lot of people were upset about this. Apple's response is quite surprising though.

Therefore, we have decided to offer every iPhone customer who purchased an iPhone from either Apple or AT&T, and who is not receiving a rebate or any other consideration, a $100 store credit towards the purchase of any product at an Apple Retail Store or the Apple Online Store. Details are still being worked out and will be posted on Apple's website next week. Stay tuned.
open letter

While not a perfect solution (which would be a $200 check in my hands from Apple), I'm impressed that they are trying to do right by us. I retract my previous vehemence.

Edit: I don't, however, appreciate Jobs' weak attempt at justifying it by writing off the price drop as the "bumpy road of technology" or whatever. Yeah, people who purchase gadgets (and anything tech related, really) are used to the idea of sometimes having bad timing on their purchase, but missing the release of the 2nd gen of a product (and the accompanying price drop of the 1st gen) by two months ten months after a product release is way, WAY different than a company cutting the price of their still new, still top-of-the-line product by 33% two months after launch.

I really like the idea of the ipod touch. It has a lot of great features. I won't get it right away, but I do plan on getting it at some point. To bad the iphone is AT&T. If it was verizon, I would definitely get it now.

Posted by fugu13 (Member # 2859) on :

If the touch comes down in price to $250, I'm definitely getting one. I'm already considering selling off my current iPod 30 GB (a gift) to help finance a touch. I can use the Wifi a lot more than I can use the extra capacity.
