I wish polling weren't disabled [Frown] .

I was disappointed when Eccleston left but now I love Tennant much more. He's like super-nerd.

Do we have to pick just one? When I saw season 1 (or twenty something) I really liked Eccleston and was disappoited he left (also cause it was one less life). Season two was kinda blah for me, but I have really been enjoying season three. I really lke the new companion. I guess with Rose, Tennant seemed more like a replacement.

Season 3 is incroyable!

Eccleston was far better at the brooding anti-hero, the universe-weary traveller who can still be delighted by wonders.
Tennant is far more Ford Prefecty - nerdy and weird, unpredictable and alien and hugely fun.
Both can bring the heroic, but in different ways.

As a little girl, watching old repeats, the Doctors I loved were three and four - and Tennant reminds me more of them than Eccleston ever did. Eccleston was great, but he was a grown up. The kid in me thinks Tennant is brilliant. The adult would pick Eccleston.

When in doubt, I usually go with the kid.

Eccleston certainly does have a bit of kid in him. When he grins, it's there.

I like them both. I couldn't pick.

I love them both. When Eccleston left I was prepared to hate Tennant. I usually hate replacements. But I've come to really love Tennant. I love the fun he brings. Ten is less outwardly brooding than Nine, but you still do see it, in flashes here and there. I love the way Ten seems happy and carefree, but can't help the mask slipping sometimes.

Perhaps the Doctor endured the Time War as Nine. It would make sense, then, that his Doctor would be more troubled. The very end of season 3 really shows that Tennant and Ten do possess the emotional power and range that Eccleston did as Nine.

I love them both. I'd probably go with Tennant/Ten, because I just simply love watching him and could easily fall for him myself. No slight on Eccleston, though.

Tom Baker and Peter Davidson.

I liked Eccleston. I don't really have a reason, I just liked him better. [Smile]

Eccleston, without a doubt.

I'd run off to explore time and the universe with his Doctor in a second. Never would happen with Tennant's Doctor.

Tennant, without a doubt. He's just so wonderfully nerdy and awesome.

Eccleston's Doctor did have a good brooding quality to him, but he had a lot of positive influence from Rose throughout season 1. His new regeneration also brought an outlook that was heavily influenced by Rose's presence. Season 2 wasn't so much trying to change the doctor's outlook as it was just enjoying his company and going on random adventures. Rose's absence is very much effecting him because of the change that she was able to cause in his countenance, which is a constant thing that Martha had to contend with through season 3.

Baker was great, but Davidson? I loved him as Tristan on All Creatures Great and Small, but found his Doctor to be pretty bland. I'd say that Baker is my favorite, Eccleston and Tennant are tied for second, and Pertwee comes in at a strong number three.

10 hands down, hes the guy who to me is most likely would not get annoyed by my company.

Which is probably why I like Eccleston better. [Wink]

I actually liked Davidson slightly more than I did Tom Baker. He seemed a little more... human, I guess.

Tom Baker was the first and only Doctor I had ever seen before Eccleston, and I adored him. I thought Eccleston was much more complex, though. Much more depth to him.

Between Eccleston and Tennant... Mmmmm... between Eccleston and Tennant...

Erm, what was the question again?

Lisa, I'll admit that I haven't seen any of Peter Davidson's episodes since I was in junior high. It's entirely possible that he'd appeal to the current adult version of me more than he did to the early teenage version.

A lot more effort has been made into making both The Doctor and his companions more three dimensional in the new series, which I definitely appreciate. I haven't seen enough of Tom Baker's acting outside of Doctor Who to have a feel for how well he'd have been able to handle a more emotionally complex Doctor.

I haven't actually seen an episode of Doctor Who since the one where Colin Baker replaced Peter Davidson. I think that must have been about when I moved to Israel. So I don't know what I'd think about any of the Doctors from 6 onwards.

Tell me, they had episodes called The Three Doctors (before Tom Baker) and The Five Doctors (during Davidson). Did they keep that up? Were there any more eps where past Doctors got together with the present one?

No question, just as the special effects and writing have been sharper than a LOT of televised scifi.

I have a friend who loved Tom Baker's Doctor who says she could never see anyone else as the character, even though she tried a few of the other regenerations. "None of them were any good." I kind of agreed with her (though I never really tried to follow Doctor Who once I was in college, and so never really saw more than a glimpse of the others), but added, "Until Eccelston."

She still won't watch the new Doctor Who, even though she's enjoyed Eccleston in other things. I'm still working on her. [Wink]

Now go over that again from the beginning, hmmm?

I'd wondered about that myself, but I'd never bothered to look. It seems that in 1985 (2 years after The Five Doctors) they produced The Two Doctors, starring Patrick Troughton and Colin Baker (#2 and #6). That's it for TV shows (unless they're named something other than "The X Doctors") although there have been some multi-doctor novels.

I've never seen any of the old Doctor Who episodes. I really liked Eccleston, and I was sad to see him go. And then I liked Tennant even more! I like that 10 has a more optimistic outlook on life but still has all that darkness inside him -- he just keeps things hidden more of the time. I like the way he hugged the guy in The Impossible Planet for daring to explore a place right by a black hole.

Yeah, that was a really great moment, wasn't it?

I'd be curious to know what you thought of the older Doctors. I haven't seen all that many of them, myself. I've seen a few episodes of the first incarnation, one or two of the second, most of the third, all of the fourth, most of the fifth, and none of the rest of them up until Eccleston.

If you get a chance, rent The City of Death. I view it as the best episode of the 4th Doctor's run (it's written by Douglas Adams and features John Cleese as a supporting actor, by the way. Not guarantors of quality, but they do make it more likely)

Hey, City of Death is one of only two Doctor Who serials that I have seen. That and the Tomb of the Cybermen. City was excellent, Tom Baker lived up to his reputation, and the plot was superb.

I should really comment on each one of these, but ... maybe later.
In order of my preference --

10.0 Tom Baker - #4
9.9 David Tennant - #10
9.6 Peter Davison - #5
9.5 Christopher Eccleston - #9
9.1 Jon Pertwee - #3
9.0 Sylvester McCoy - #7
8.5 Paul McGann - #8
8.1 William Hartnell - #1
8.0 Patrick Troughton - #2
7.0 Colin Baker - #6
