I normally don't find anyone dying humorous, in any way...but this struck me as, well, just plain dumb.

And I worry about my son playing Mario for more than 15 minutes.

Someone better warn Blayne. [Wink]

I'm sure there's a special place in the Darwin Awards for this.

Wasn't there a similar story about a Korean gamer dying in an internet cafe sometime last year?

There was another guy a few months back that lasted 15 days, this dude was a pansy.

Anyone want to bet on which game it was?

Can World of Warcraft be a two-time killer, or will it be something newer?

Several cities have clinics to treat what psychiatrists have dubbed "Internet addiction" in users, many of them children and teenagers, who play online games or surf the Web for days at a time.

Oh great, I just hiccupped.

Yeah, that's right. It's happened here with a girl on a WoW binge, didn't it? I remember seeing pictures of the huge in-game funeral her friends and guild held for her - which is very sweet but very creepy at the same time.

It can really become a destructive addiction. I'm a past obsessive myself, so I always used to think, in defense of it as a lifestyle, that criticism against intense online gaming was ignorant and that socializing is socializing. I see stories like this and then it isn't that simple. It's incredibly scary to think about how easily people can let themselves become too involved, because it's a very comfortable process.

::'dit for QB 'n thought

I don't know why this is so news worthy. Seems to me far more people die of alcohol poisoning and you don't see that in the news that often. This is the third incident of death directly involving excessive video game playing that I have ever heard of.

Though video game addiction is CERTAINLY a big problem nowadays, I and family members of mine have suffered as a result of it, mentioning that some guy in Guang Zhou died from exhaustion at an internet cafe seems as important as reporting a man was chopping down a tree when the axe head swung free and killed his coworker.

I think it's because it's super bizarre, and pretty relevant.

Well, it's newsworthy because, unlike both of your examples, video games aren't supposed to carry any significant risk of death.

If you drink, especially to excess, you know that you're risking alcohol poisoning. If you swing an axe you know there's a chance you might lose control of it and hurt someone.

Yeah, videogames are supposed to just make you unfit and possibly decrease your age of "natural cause" death, like twinkies.

37 posts and she's already ripping on Blayne. She fits in =)

As obvious as it is to me why something like this is newsworthy every time it happens, now El JT's got be worried about something else. Isn't it more alarming that thousands of people who DO know the risk of something like alcohol poisoning, can't refrain from continuing anyway?

</minor derail>

Back on topic; don't blame the games! People who get addicted probably had tendencies already dormant D:

The 30-year-old man fainted at a cybercafe in the city of Guangzhou on Saturday afternoon after he had been playing games online for three days, the Beijing News reported.
How is this even possible? The cybercafes I've been to aren't open 24/7, and even if they are, shouldn't there be some sort of time limit?! It's not like cybercafes are automated.

"Sir, you've been playing non-stop for 3 days. Please go home and eat and drink something. Perhaps I may suggest some sleep?"

Do you also believe that we shouldn't blame alcohol for alcoholism, because the tendency for alcoholism was probably already there, dormant?

Is that the something else I have to worry about? If so, why?

Even so, I think Blayne should be given much love for at least putting up with the ribbing he gets (deserved or not). Here is the excuse I offer on his behalf:

Uh, wait. Blaming alcohol is an option?

I'd make a pun about the guy already not having a life before he died, but it just seems wrong.

I motion for a ban on the scientific knowledge of the existence of alcohol.

Now of course I'm joking, I understand that you're saying that the alcohol beverage manufacturers could hold some fault (as long as they make it people will buy it). But I think that the demand is more of the problem, as we can see with the prohibition.
