Sorry about your insomnia, that sucks.

You can try natural ambience, a sound generator program which has rain and other water sounds. It has a 30 day free trial--after that it's $13.

I thought there was a free ambient program at Download.com but I can't find it on the website or on my computer.

Darlin', email me your address through this board, and I'll send you a CD.

I happen to have a Rain and Thunder CD that I got as a gift (since that's my favorite weather), and I'd be glad to send it to you to help you sleep.

The fun bit was playing it at work, and having people jump up from their desks and run outside to roll up their car windows. [Evil]

Any recommendations I am thinking about would violate forum policy and would not be proper because of your age.

Of course, I average 3-4 hours of sleep a day... what do I know?

I'm 20, how is whatever it is not proper?

I don't mean to threadjack here, but I'm also having trouble sleeping. It's a combination of irregular sleep schedule (college), my neck hurting a bit, and thinking too much while i'm sleeping.

Any general tips?
Would a cd with rain sounds help?

Go to bed at the same time every night. You'd be amazed what it does for your sleeping habits.

Posted by Lanfear (Member # 7776) on :

It's not even a possibility.
With the varying amounts of homework, and random adventures going on all the time.
I guess I could go to bed really late every night.. But i don't think that will help me feel better rested.

If I can survive people sneidng me anthrax as a birthday present I can survive a mail order bomb.

All else being equal, a clear conscience is the greatest sleep aid yet devised.

I've gotta say...if you're having a lot of trouble sleeping, try some Unisom or something along those lines just for a little while. Not sleeping can increase your anxiety. And when you're anxious, you can't sleep. I know a lot of people don't like sleep aids, but it's really important to break that cycle.

You're in Canada. Nothing blows up there anyway.

Try taking Melatonin! It really does work.

I sometimes take benadryl for insomnia...not a label use I know. Try working out, perhaps. A common tip is getting up if you can't fall asleep for 30 or so minutes, getting a drink or something. Try wriggling your toes 12 times.

Posted by Tammy (Member # 4119) on :

Benadryl makes you sleepy, but there's an ingredient in it that doesn't truly help you sleep. I'm not sure what it is.

Self-hypnosis.

Reading a book I have here, Mastering the Techniques of Teaching. It'll slam those peepers shut in a flash! [Embarrassed]

Benadryl is the same as the sleep ingredient in Tylenol pm and as the only active ingredient in Simply Sleep. Unisom has the antihistamine from Nyquil or also benadryl (depending on tablet or liquid form).

I always have trouble getting to sleep.
So I have started using Sleepy Time extra with Valerian in it.
As long as you are not allergic to valerian it should help along with the rain sounds.
Just don't drive afte drinking it. It's very relaxing stuff.

Posted by Lanfear (Member # 7776) on :

Any of this stuff make you groggy in the morning?
Because, sometimes at college you can only get 5-6 hours of sleep anyway.

Posted by pH (Member # 1350) on :

It depends. You might have to try them and see how you react. Benadryl and its active ingredient only really keep me asleep for two to four hours, but I sometimes have so much trouble with insomnia that even certain prescription sleeping pills (Lunesta, etc.) will only put me out for three or four hours.

I can always fall right to sleep with Metallica's Black album.

Posted by Samprimary (Member # 8561) on :

- darkness
- white noise (like a fan)
- proper temperatures
- a schedule as regulated as possible
- a sleeping environment devoid of distraction (no computers in room, etc)
- the clock face turned away from your vision

Try a whole lot of physical work or exercise.

The only time I've slept soundly for 8 hours without stirring in the past few years is after I spent 15 hours doing strenuous construction-type work. (I usually sit at a desk.) I slept flat on my back without moving or waking up all night. Except for the remaining muscle fatigue, I felt more refreshed than I had in a year too.

Edit: come on, people, ease up with the pills and potions! [Wink] Exercise is important for good sleeping. Not that I put this advice into practice too often. And maybe you know Blayne and he's a fitness nut, if so then ignore me.

Exercise is the best answer. do it.

Blayne, I'll drop it in the mail tomorrow. Well, that's my plan. Until then, have some warm milk and cookies.

I have regular issues with sleeping. Originally a doctor advised me to try Benadryl to see if that helped. It helped me fall asleep, but not stay asleep. I also felt groggy in the mornings and started developing headaches.

A Respiratory Therapist who handled a sleep study that I participated in told me that while Benadryl does help you fall asleep; it interrupts your sleep patterns, so that you end up not getting the quality sleep that you need. He also told me to practice proper sleep hygiene.

I always read when I get in bed. That's a hard habit for me to break.

See, the whole...don't do anything in bed but sleep thing doesn't work well for me. There are times when I will get really anxious if I don't have anything else to focus on except "Go to sleep. Why are you not sleeping?! Shut up, brain, or I'll stab you with a q-tip!"

My weapon of choice for good sleep is a crippling laudanum addiction.

Exactly. Natural herbal remedies are by far the best bet. And in Canada that shouldn't be a problem.

Melatonin. It's natural. Try it.

Seriously, try Metallica, it works.

An interesting thing is that as a Jew, I never have insomnia the night of the Sabbath (Friday night). God's little gift, I suppose, in return for not eating pork or having any pre-marital fun.

I did not have insomnia per se once on my trip to Israel last year (though I did not fall asleep at all twice, which I attribute to jet-lag ruined sleep patterns). In fact, I just fell asleep immediately.

Try to do something meaningful everyday and get plenty of excersize.

[ROFL]
I've had these very same thoughts.

Exercise is key. I know it's been said, but I just thought I would say I agree with that very strongly, it's always helped me. Even if you just go on a quick night run and then shower, sometimes it helps me get to sleep faster. Your body's natural chemicals, which are released when you exercise, are almost always better than synthetic drugs.

On the other hand, if you have something on your mind, then it's a whole other story. Stress about the next day, stress about an overdrawn checking account etc, those are things you have to settle before you can attempt to sleep and only you can do that, not drugs. Good luck to you Blayne. [Smile]
