Not me; it's not my birthday. But I was wondering... my nephew and niece turned 13 a couple of weeks ago, and we got into a discussion about feeling a year older on a birthday.
It's only happened to me once, that I can remember. My 17th. And since the only thing significant about being 17 is being able to see R rated movies without your parents (which I was doing before that anyway), I never did understand why.
Has anyone here ever felt older when they woke up on their birthday? Which one? Why?

I felt older when I turned 20. Actually, I went through a crisis of "I AM OLD WHAT AM I DOING WITH MY LIFE." I don't know why...except that it meant I wasn't a teenager anymore.

to expand, there have been times in my life where I have felt "older". But they never came on my birthday or upon waking up one morning. They usually came randomly in the middle of a conversation or train of thought. A sudden realization.

I felt older on my 21st birthday, but I think it was because I got to hang up the fake me that had been 24 for the past 3 years. I almost shed a tear when I shelved ol' faithful, my fake ID. But that was more of an "old enough to do stuff legally" older, not an "I actually feel like I'm older than I was yesterday, or at any other time."

For me it was when I realized that I had memories of my parents when they were the age that I currently was.

Ouch. I'm 44, and I remember my Mom making a party for my Dad's 28th birthday. My youngest sister is 37 already.
Now I'm really feeling old.

For me I started feeling old when I started reaching ages that my parents were when they got married/had children. My dad for example was 22 when he got married and 25 when he had my older sister. If I follow my dad's model I should have a child by now.

I am the baby of my family with my oldest sibling significantly older then me, so I am not yet as old as my mom was when she had me. I think my 21st birthday I felt older, but I celebrated my 21st birthday on my honeymoon.

For me I won't feel old for another few months, when I turn 22. I always thought of life as a series of steps.
14 -- I could get a real job. 16 -- I could drive. 17 -- I could watch R movies. 18 -- I could vote, join the army, was legally an adult, could rent porn (or in my case, start to work at a video store that had a small percentage of some porn). 21 -- I could drink legally.
But there really aren't any more steps after 21, are there?

You can, but it's much more expensive. Insurance rates drop sharply when you hit 26.

I started feeling old the day I had a girl that I used to babysit when she was about 2 or 3 babysit my own children who were those ages I feel older every day now.

I also felt oldish when I realized that my mother was my age when she had my older sister, her first child. But it's also a strange thought because even now, two years past that point, I can't imagine being old enough to have a kid.

I didn't necessarily feel "old" when I turned 30 but I felt like people took me more seriously...that I was a "real adult".
Now I'm old enough that I've been out of High School as long as the age I was when I left it (if that makes sense...) that makes me feel old!

Turning 31 was great. I was a little surprised to still be alive.
I think I remember suddenly feeling older when I turned 21. Not a very pleasant feeling. I liked being a kid, in most ways.

I can definitely see how that would make you feel older. It freaks me out a bit to see people my age getting engaged and married. Fortunately, I don't get too much pressure from the family side, since my parents married when my dad was 45 and my mom was 35. She had me at 37 and my brother at 39.
So as of yet, not too much "Where are the grandkids?!" type pressure. Just...social pressure from peers. So-and-so had their wedding last June, oh, those two just got engaged....you know, that kind of thing.

I felt older the other day when some coleagues were arguoing about who had had their driving license the longest and was thus the more experienced driver.
Old age happened when I realised that the chief 'arguer' was four when I took my driving test.
Other than that I forget how old I am, and havet o work it out if someone asks my age. I stopped counting after 30...
