My father had some Li'l Abner books when I was little, so when I found that you can read the strip online on a day by day basis I started following it. Unfortunately much of the humor is dated. I can follow most of it, but I'm pretty sure the face in the last panel of this strip is supposed to be someone who is easily recognizable, but only if it happens to be 1955.

Any ideas who it is?

I'd guess it's the guy who lost the election. No idea who specifically. Heck, I'm not sure who was President in '55.

Adlai Stevenson ran against Eisenhower in both 1952 and 1956... I guess it sort of looks like him. If the cartoon character didn't have the hat it would help.

The election was in '52... that'd be a long time to hang around as a readily memorable face.

But in 1955, he would have been getting ready to run again and he was a pretty significant political figure even when he wasn't running. I think maui babe is right - and the hairline would have been a help!

I recognized him immediately as Adlai - probably more from the context than the picture.

What year were you born?

I think you got it right Maui Babe. Here's a picture that more closely matches the facial expression in the comic.

Started reading it on-line a year or so ago when I vaguely recognized the artist's style.
Took a while to figure out exactly who though.

Yeah, I knew Frank Frazetta drew it during that time period.
