Yes, I will be seeing a doctor tomorrow for sure. But I'm not sure if it's serious enough that I should go to the after-hours clinic today or not.

How can I tell if a sore throat is from an infection or something like post-nasal drip? I don't have a fever, but I woke up with my throat tasting funny. If it absolutely cannot wait until tomorrow, I can go to urgent care, but I'd really rather not since I don't have a referral form, and without it I'd have to pay a $200 deductible up front. I also have a group meeting later today, but I don't want to be spreading disease through the MBA program if it could be something like strep.

How bad is the pain? What other symptoms do you have?

It has been my experience that when my throat is sore for general reasons (cold, flu, and so forth), it hurts down in the throat. But when it is sore from post-nasal drip (about half the time, this time of year) the soreness is higher up, closer to the back of my mouth (closer to where the drip originates).

YMMV

I haven't had too many other symptoms...my ears hurt a bit, and I've been pretty tired. The part that really worries me is that it tastes bad. My mom always used to worry that it was strep if my throat tasted bad. It hurts...like.....enough. Like, it feels kinda swollen-ish. But it can't be my tonsils; I was born with such small tonsils that doctors sometimes ask if I've had them removed.

Get some Cold-eeze cough drops and suck on them. If it goes away then it wasn't strep.

The bad taste could also be from post nasal drip. If you are still feeling poorly tomorrow, go see a doctor. Until then, you can try Tylenol, decongestants, and lots of fluids.

Me, I like the way Jell-o feels on a sore throat. Also bouillon, chicken soup, and pineapple juice (but not mixed together).

Do you have a flashlight? If you get in front of a mirror and look at the back of your throat (I know you can't see as well as if someone else did it for you, but there it is) check to see if it's approximately the right color. If it's a funny color (like white) go to the after hours clinic for sure.
