The Love Guru

A Mike Myers comedy, where Jessica Alba owns the Toronto Maple Leafs, Justin Timberlake is a hockey player, and Verne Troyer is a coach. Oh, and Myers and Sir Ben Kingsley are gurus trying to help a hockey player get over the fact that his girl dumped him for JT.

*spoilers*
And Myers has the Leafs win the cup. YUCK.

Why, Mike Myers, WHY?!

After seeing Timberlake in Black Snake Moan I will never be able to take him seriously as an ... well, as anything.

Well, he did do Blood Rayne.

They are filming tonight at the Sabres/Leafs game at the ACC. I hope my fellow Sabres fans are there to represent.

Some things you do for your career, and some things you do for bills.

Beat me to it! Although I always thought it was one word; IMDB lists it as one word, but with a capital "R". Hmmm...

I wondered if maybe the director was a good guy, and this would be something like Spanglish or Punch Drunk Love was for Adam Sandler.

Nope. This is the director who brought you every Mike Myers movie I haven't been interested in seeing.

Mike Myers I believe wrote the characters and story as well, so I'm leaning towards things you do for yourself as an actor/writer.

edit: Or were you referring to Kingsley?

Kingsley may or may not be doing it to cover his bills. I read an interview he did regarding BloodRayne and he said that he took the job because he's always wanted to play a vampire. So maybe he's doing it for fun.

That would make sense. His IMDB profile is an interesting read, where it states he had a choice of becoming either an actor or becoming a musician with the Beatles' manager.

But, come on... BloodRayne?!? He was Gandhi for cryin' out loud!!! Then again, maybe once you portray Gandhi and win an oscar for it it's all downhill from there...

You took him seriously before? Why?

How can you not take the Mickey Mouse Club seriously?

Justin Timberlake -

I saw him in 'Alpha Dog' where I though he did a really good job. Unfortunately, he did a really good job of playing himself, or play how he envisions himself in real-life.

And he can probably continue to play good roles and create good characters as long as those characters are completely in line with his own vision of himself as a white cracker rapper gangsta wannabe poser that is rapidly becoming as trite and stale as an old hippy.

Any role beyond that is out of his reach...in every sense of the word.

As to Ben Kingsley and Mike Myers, I suspect they did it for the money.

During the radio broadcast of the Sabres/Leafs game last night, you could hear the PA guy coaching the Leafs fans to stay in their seats and cheer loud for the filming. Rough going considering the Leafs got blown out. [Razz]

... Wouldn't they be the Leaves?

Feel free to tell them that. [Razz] [Big Grin]

... Wouldn't it be nice if they could actually play hockey?

The biggest problem I have with this is Toronto winning the Cup.

The plot has already destroyed my suspension of disbelief.

Ben Kinsley, Christopher Lee, and Michael Cain are three utterly fantastic actors that have participated in many questionable projects. Sometimes you build a palace, and sometimes you build an outhouse. People gotta work!

This project does sound truly awful, though.

You failed to mention the king of "questionable projects": Sean Connery.

Don't forget Peter O'Toole.

I mean, maybe it's a British thing. Maybe they don't care what Americans think.

I just love that mentality that famous movie actors "have to pay the bills"

I'll accept "they wanted to be acting again" or "bad decision" or even "it sounded like fun, they didn't care about the quality!"

But to say that people with bank account statements in the upper stratosphere have to do crappy films To Pay The Bills is just...mind-boggling.

Really think Myers did this movie because he thought it would be fun and funny for the audience. In an interview I read a few months ago he talked about writing this movie and he said he went on a pretty long hiatus from writing before making this movie. His last movie I can think of that he helped write was Austin Powers: Goldmember. That's like 5 years old now?

I'm hoping it will turn out (partly) hilarious. It's possible, even from the given premise. I mean, View From the Top was, IMO, an absolutely horrible movie, except for the scenes with Myers in them, which had me peeing my pants. I will hold out hope for this movie, and perhaps rent it when it hits the video store.

Kingsley, but I'm pretty sure that above was stated by a famous actor. Either on Inside the Actor's studio, or some written interview.

All I know is it isn't mine. [Wink]

Some people enjoy working. I don't know these people, but they exist. Creative jobs can be very fulfilling, even when they are silly projects.

Also, I think it must be very easy to spend a lot of money if you can acquire significant sums in a go.
