My younger brothers were obsessed with DBZ from the mid 90s until about '01 or '02.

So, other than the names, and the fact that they actually call them Dragonballs...is there anything in this story that is remotely like Dragon Ball Z? Do the balls even combine to form Shenlong?
I really liked DBZ when I was younger. I never liked Dragonball, and I never went past Z into GT, I never even finished DBZ because I got sick of it after awhile.
This isn't going to be horrible because it is a live action version of DBZ, it's going to be horrible because THEY ARE GOING TO CALL IT DBZ WHEN IT HAS ALMOST NOTHING TO DO WITH DBZ!

I liked DBZ for a little while, even if it did cause me to start pronouncing my zeds wrong (silly Americans and your "zee"). But man did it go nowhere fast - I jumped off the bandwagon pretty quick.

I've never understood how someone can call z, zed. The d sound just throws everything off. Why is there an additional consonant sound in only one letter?
Anyway, on Dragon Ball Z, I've always felt that the show sucks. I watched a couple episodes because I heard from various sources that it was good. It was utter garbage. I have no doubt that a movie based on it will be crappy too.

Yeah, I could never quite understand DBZ fandom. While Dr. Slump is a delightful exercise in cartoon whimsy, DB, DBZ, and all other follow-ups are largely empty fight scenes with lots of ultimately pointless banter.

If by fight scenes you mean time slowing down so much that the entirety of an episode actually is only 1 minute. And by pointless banter you mean people starring at anyone new they meet with their mouths hanging open while that gag and or scream. And the fact that every episode is actually completely covered in the "next episode preview", which only takes a couple minutes tops, is completely ridiculous.

I can't imagine how bad something would have to be before making it more like DBZ would improve it.
I mean, most forms of torture would be made worse by making them more like DBZ; I can only assume that the same applies to film.

Actually, from the plot they've posted it sounds like the movie is based loosely on the Dragonball storyline but with Goku being 18 instead of a small child, not on Dragonball Z. Not sure how well that's going to go over for them, since a lot of people tend to forget the first series even existed.

The letter didn't originally exist in the Latin alphabet, so it was borrowed from the Greek alphabet. It kept the Greek name (zeta) for a while, which eventually became zed. But at some point it acquired the name zee on analogy with most of the other consonants.

In my experience it seems to be more of a British commonwealth thing than an American English thing.

This is something that I can simply not abide by. I feel no shame in expressing my devotion to the phenom known as DBZ (okay, just a little shame). That show was a staple of my life for a good while and to see it be turned into...this, well it just isn't something that sits right with me. Thanks Hollywood for eating up my childhood and handing me this steamy mess.

Megabyte, you cannot actually claim that of DBZ as DBZ stayed with the exact same formula arc after arc.
Goku/Gohan/Go-Something is having some peace and quiet when Suddenly a Big Alien Monster they at first think is easy to fight suddenly kicks their ass forcing them to find someone, something, or train for a arbitrary length of time until finally Goku comes back from Somewhere and Saves the Day with a 1d12 chance of having to sacrifice himself doing it with a almost 1d1 chance of being brought back to life 3d100 days later.
And if an Alien Enemy Dies there is a 1d100+1 chance per day of being brought back to life SOMEHOW to fight Goku for revenge is whatdoyouknow is more powerful and asskicking then before.
Repeat Step One.

DBZ is anime. It's a Japanese cartoon.
There's a great diversity in the premises of anime. This year alone I've watched a Victorian era romance (Emma), a hard science fiction story (Planetes), a dream-like history of Japanese cinema (Millennium Actress), the ultimate giant robot epic (Gurren Lagann), and a children's animal fantasy (Panda Go Panda!).

Looks like they've opted to start really early in the Z saga, which could be alright I suppose. Seems like they've amped up what Piccolo is capable of by several orders of magnitude. At the very least this movie doesn't seem to be as bad of a train wreck as I was sure it would be, it might even be entertaining to some degree.

I will be the first to admit I was obsessed with DBZ from ages 11-13. I was the kid who watched Japanese fansubs of episodes that hadn't yet been aired over here in America, on a dial-up connection even. Everyone would always ask me what happens later.
But...yeah, that was back then. I guess what drew me in was the concept of characters always trying to become stronger, newer transformations, special abilities, etc. Obviously there isn't much substance to the show, and the only time I'd watch it now, in my 20s, is for hysterical laughs with my friends, or nostalgia.
Sometime last year I was in the hall of my dorm, talking to some friends, and I suddenly hear "DESTRUCTO DISC!!" as an orange Frisbee hits me in the head.
And on that note, I just started playing Chrono Trigger last night. Now there's a story.

Chrono Trigger would be an awesome show if done right.
Now don't get me wrong, I like the characters of DBZ and continued watching just to see the characters but I got fed up with the massively stuffed episodes of "OVER 9000 RAWR!" charging up for 2-3 epsides until finally the Unstoppable Force met the Unmovable Object.

Let me just say watching the trailer in a movie theater in Japan was awesome. Absolute silence the whole time and then about 7 seconds after they uttered the phrase, "Dragon Ball Evolution!" there was a bunch of laughing and chattering. I think pretty much everyone in the theater had no idea they were watching a Dragon Ball preview until it actually said Dragon Ball on the screen.

Oh, and on the DBZ movie, I stopped watching DBZ sometime in the first(?) Frieza saga. I loved it for a few months, but just grew tired of it. Years later some of friends had started watching it and were asking me what I thought of various characters (Trunks and the different androids (I don't know their numbers)) I honestly had no clue what was happening. What really caught me by surprise is how Gohan was supposed to be older than Trunks, yet trunks was an old teenager, yet I was expected to believe that Trunks was Vegeta's and Bulma's child. (No one clued me in on the whole... time... travel thing.)

It's too bad you stopped watching but if you just didn't like the concept of super saiyan you probably wouldn't enjoy the rest of the series. All I'll say is when Goku and Co finally get down to fighting Cell it was probably the coolest series of episodes I have ever seen in an anime, bar none.
