Because I dropped my phone in water today.

Maybe I should consider getting cellphone insurance, but it's more for me to pay. I have no idea if it will work. The guy at the store did something that made it seem like it was going to work.

If it was turned off then DON'T try turning it on. Wait a few days for it to dry, then try to turn it on. If you try to turn it on now then I guarantee that it will break.

Too bad you're not a Navy SEAL. I bet they have waterproof cell phones.

Take out the battery soak it in rubbing alcohol for 45 minutes then let it dry in a warm area for 24 hours.

Now you tell me this.

I opened it up and wiped some of the water out... It seemed like it was broken because it was offline, my pictures were still up but the date and time kept having to be set, but when I went to the Sprint store the guy took out the battery, put it in and DID something and it worked again like normal.
I took the battery out again and put it on my fridge.

Maybe I'll try to turn it on tomorrow or later tonight to call my mother.

Synesthesia, that sucks, but I've heard plenty worse.

Case and point, my mother FLUSHED HER'S DOWN A PUBLIC TOILET. It was in her shirt pocket and as she went to flush, if fell out and gurgle gurgle it was gone. After my dad heard, as a joke he called the phone (which was still working, somewhere coated in sewage) and left a voice mail along the lines of "gurgle gurgle gurgle." He then realized that no one was going to hear that voice mail, and also felt stupid.

Good luck with it.

EEEEEEEEEEEE
That is much worse.
I hope it works again. 200 bucks is a lot of money.

My brother’s girlfriend tossed him his phone and it fell into his Coke which was sitting in his lap. Then he let our niece play with it and she drooled all over it and broke it. He now has insurance. If you're accident prone it's worth it.

I was going to make an I Am Legend related joke. But I'm too tired to think of anything that is remotely amusing.

I've had bad luck with phones and water, too. My first phone fell out of my pocket and into the water dish of my friend's dog when I was dogsitting. I left it turned off for a few days until it dried out, but it was never the same again. It would randomly change my settings.

Then, when I finally got a new phone with my New Every 2 plan--with a camera, too, which I had wanted so much, I sent it through the wash after only a few short weeks. I was wearing these really heavy sports pants that belong to my husband that have zip-up pockets. The pants were so heavy that I totally forgot the phone was in there when my toddler barfed all over me and I had to strip off my clothes. Efficient housewife that I am, I threw the whole bundle of barfy mess in the washer right that minute. The worst part about the whole experience was having to tell my husband when he came home from work. I hate admitting when I do lame stuff. Fortunately, we had his old phone, so that's what I'm still using until we have credits in another two years.

Don't feel stupid, my brother dropped his in a bucket of paint.

I have the insurance. You still have to pay $50 each time you use it, and I think there's a limit of twice a year or something, but for absent minded pplz, it's well worth the $5 a month. [Smile]

Never paid for the insurance, probably should, though. I dropped one of my phones in a bowl of cereal once. That was an experience. It didn't set of the water detection thing inside the phone, so I was able to take it back and get a replacement for free. However until I got it to the store all I could do was send and receive text messages. It was telling me it was connected to a car kit. Seeing as how I've never owned a car kit, let alone, plugged my phone into one, I found that a little hard to believe.

That replacement became a VERY expensive chew toy for a German Shepherd. He had my phone for maybe a minute while I was play GRAW and it was in two pieces. actually..... link

So yeah.... destroying phones is not a cheap habit.

Just thought I'd let you know you're not alone in problems with cell phones. Good luck with yours.

Good news is, it works
Bad news is it only works in ANALOG!

OMG, analog! I didn't know there was such a thing anymore, did you?

I wanted to express solidarity vis a vis your thread title. I've put my phone through the washer before in the pocket of my pants. I like a clean phone. [Smile] Also credit cards, I like clean credit cards too. I wash mine regularly. [Wink]

Washing things too soon is a bad habit, I decided. Now I make everything sit on the laundry table at least a week before it gets washed. This turns out to improve the longevity of my phones.

I was witness to the following: A group of students waiting for class to begin, on the third floor of the library building (at Iowa Central Community College, if anyone is interested). A student's cell phone fell out of her pocket to the first floor and fell in the little fish pool there. Not only in water, but a 3-story fall.

I found out a couple weeks ago that Sanyo makes a pretty waterproof phone. It fell out of my jacket pocket and under my car when I was getting home from work, and I failed to notice until I'd already gone back out again for the evening. And it happened to be pouring rain that night, so the phone was sitting out in that for a good 4 hours or so. It didn't get drowned in a puddle or anything though, just rained on, and very luckily neither I nor anyone else drove over it during that time. I found it when I got home, brought it back in and dried it off and it still worked fine [Smile] Lucky me.

I've sent two phones through the washer and dryer while I was dorming a few years ago. Surprisingly both were fine. <3 old, sturdy phones. It was extremely lame on my part because after I did it the first time, it was only about a month before I did it again. Doh.

I used to pay for cell phone insurance, but now that I'm free of contract, I don't. I dropped it the first time I lost my phone. Guess what? The insurance doesn't cover lost phones.

Unless you buy an expensive phone, or if you're absent-minded, there's no point. After the lost phone experience, I bought a replacement for $50 on eBay. Yes, I'm just using a standard Nokia brick phone, so that explains the cost. [Wink]

My insurance covers lost phones.

I wasn't sure where to put this, but the thread title was the closest I could find without starting a new one. As the saying goes, reality is stranger than fiction. As a member of this person's religion I am ashamed and think he might have a few emotional problems. However, I must say that his bank robbing persona is very . . . interesting.

First you have what he did as a criminal:

quote:
The Los Angeles Police Department alleges Rodriguez snatched close to half a million bucks out of bank vaults throughout the northeast San Fernando Valley.
Then, you look closely at some of the things he did and said:

quote:
"He said, 'I spent a little on myself, then I went down to Skid Row and handed it out,'" Guillory said. "He went on to tell us about all the rest of the robberies."

She'd been tracking him for months, based on DNA evidence obtained from the scarf he used to cover his face in an earlier robbery in Van Nuys. He'd scribbled lines from the Book of Mormon inside alluding to 1st Nephi 3:7. Guillory asked him about the passage, and he said he belonged to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

I guess he missed the scripture in the Doctrine and Covenants that basically says no wrong can make a right, or rather the ends do not justify the means.

The whole article is worth a read.

But that doesn't have anything to do at all with dropping your phone in water...

I have strong doubts as to whether the phone was actually still working after having gone down a toilet- the fact that the voice mail picked up in no way indicates that the phone was working.

I had to fish my cellphone out of my sister's swimming pool once.

Don't ask.

Occasional, you should just start another thread. If you haven't shortly, I'll have to plagiarize your post.

I had a phone get drowned by baby spit. It seemed unfair because I'd let her play with it so many times before with no ill effect. And my husband is always drowning his phones and they come back. I really liked that phone too, but we just put the smart card in an old phone.

I wish I could lose some phones. My husband is saving them to build a castle out of, is all I can figure.

Ela,

We thought the same thing, and have experienced a dead battery or broken phone sending callers directly to the voicemail, but my mother's phone still rang for 2 days before it finally would send calls directly to voicemail.

Did we ever have a discussion here about that lady whose car ran off the road and her husband tried to report her missing but he automatically became the prime suspect, and after 8 days someone checked her cell phone and they were able to locate her car?

I don't know if my cell phone would last 8 days. It was such a freaky story. She was alive when they found her, but very dehydrated and she was probably going to lose some of her extremities. Oct 3 update

My best friend showered with his cell phone on him and it still worked. I think we were at the beach or something and he had it in his bathing suit, and when he took the shower he forgot about it. It was a long one too.

Sorry everyone, I thought this thread was dead. That is another reason I used it. Instead, I brought it back to life. No worry.

Regarding phone insurance:

I put my iPhone as a scheduled item on my renter's/home insurance policy. Originally, it was set at a value of $600, but has since been lowered to $400. I pay an additional $2.47 per month for coverage of my phone. NO DEDUCTIBLE. That means if my phone is lost, stolen, damaged, etc. etc., my insurance company will pay for its replacement with no additional cost to me. Check with YOUR insurance companies to see if they have any information on technology items as part of your home/rent insurance.

I am stupider!
Because I did it again, only THIS TIME IT WAS IN A POT FULL OF MIXED VEGGIES!

At least it wasn't the toilet.
I bathed it in some rubbing alcohol. that and the old phone, but not for 45 minutes, but I'm letting the remaining alcohol evaporate.

One of the servers where I work spilled some water on a guy's phone the other day and he said it was broke and we had to buy him a new one. My manager said okay. So he comes back the next day with a printout from an internet website saying how much the phone was and that he'd like the cash. My boss asked to see the bill of sale from the phone place, but he said he hadn't gotten it yet. So she called and found out yes, that's how much it was. So he asked for his money, and she asked to see the phone. He said that the phone place took it and wouldn't give it back. With no proof of purchase and no broken phone...she didn't know how should could justify handing the cash over.

I think the insurance, which on my phone is like a buck fifty a month or some such, is totally worth it. Phones are just too expensive.
