Hello, Eric, and welcome. [Smile] What brought you here to Hatrack?

You might find it takes a bit to get a bunch of people to warm up to you, since we've had a rash of spam posters preceded by a few people who were just trying to sell things (e.g., a book that the guy had self-published).

But we'd love to learn more about you. Tell us about yourself!

Wow, it's a real new member post! Welcome!

Real members are so rare >_>. Welcome, hope you have a good time.

Welcome! [Smile]

Ditto on the spam, though; hopefully this isn't another of those super sophisticated bots. ^^

Dunno, Jon: We seem to be getting a slow but even flow of new blood.

Well, yeah. But so long as Eric wants to be here for more than shilling, that is awesome! [Big Grin]

Welcome to Hatrack, Eric. What other forums have you joined? What was it that drew you to Hatrack?

Posted by Noemon (Member # 1115) on :

Oh, you're a spammer. Nevermind.

Posted by ClaudiaTherese (Member # 923) on :

Ah. Well, it looked like spam, but I had my hopes.

Nice way to pin it, Noemon.

There should be an online "identify the spam" test.

Some subcategories:
- can you spot suspiciously vague titles?
- multiple exclamation marks and you!!!
- who's afeared of the capital letter?

Just sent a message to your gmail account, by the way.

I laughed aloud when I saw that, Threads. Something there is that doesn't love a byzantine URL, eh?

Its cool as long as hes not a sophisticated bot, an dumb one is okay with me,
hi mr.Eric/Robot [Wave]

Posted by brojack17 (Member # 9189) on :

So what's the point in that. It's not necessarily spam.

Posted by ClaudiaTherese (Member # 923) on :

Unfortunately, that search missed the Peak Oil news & message forum, the Bodybuilding.com forum (where it has already been deleted for spam), RelicNews, 8th Generation Honda Civic forum, I8HMUD.com, TechArena.com, The Sam Houston Bulletin Board, Steve's Digicams, BetaGame Revolutions, and geez, really too many to list (and all today! and all "just what [he] needed"!), but it did catch the Apnea Support Forum, the INTP personality forum, as well as some others.

Methinks Eric understates the meaning of "couple," in spades. [Wink] Although I await with baited breath to see if there could be any one interest that ties all of these fora together, maybe something to share with all of us -- from those interested in climate change to bodybuilding, from OSC to Sleep Apnea -- that is "just what we needed," too? Hopefully we will find out soon.

I still think we should get points for catching spam/being first to whistle et cetra, and have the scores on the front page. It'd be fun [Smile] .

I don't know, Phanto. I have this money just collecting in my pocket, and dear oh dear, nothing to spend it on.

Whatever shall I do?

Surely there is someone out there willing to take it. If only ... if only there were someone who took a personal interest in me, who would be my friend, who would show me what to do to get rid of this awful weight in my pocket that is almost dragging off my skirt. Scandalous!

Too much money! It is a karmic burden. I pray, I tell you, I howl for release, for some shining light to show me the way to something to buy. Pretty please. You know, I'm not picky -- maybe an herbal supplement, or an online class on how to make friends, some nice fresh reading material. Anything will do. [Smile]

v1agra?

I think that might pull my skirt off, too.

Edited to add a poll:

Apparently I am referring to
1) being irresistably attractive
2) the size of my [ahem, as it were]

Discuss.

The proliferation marks it as spam, but the content does as well. Some of us picked up on the content -- Noemon just added an indication of the proliferating, er, meme to cinch it. Whatever it is (sophisticated bot or individual paid to set up site-specific profiles), it isn't hear for the warm fuzzies. Unfortunately.

Ah, the ol' welcome-the-newbie-with-open-arms-distract-us-with-falling-skirts-then-whistle-after-28-posts ploy. Nicely played.

Yeah, but what does it do? ("that's the beauty of it" replies strictly forbidden! [No No] ) I mean, he didn't give us a link to click on or anything. What's the point of this spambot? Seriously. I'm not arguing that it's not spam, obviously it is, but doesn't spam usually have some purpose, however annoying to the rest of us? I mean, this bot isn't waiting for all the vast hordes at all of those sites to go send an email to the addie in Eric Bishop's profile, is it?

I don't get it.

Posted by ClaudiaTherese (Member # 923) on :

I think it is either a sophisticated bot or a paid person (that is lazy enough to just cut-and-paste) which would have been scheduled to follow up with other messages at later times, as if there were a conversation.

Maybe something like:
quote:
hey this looks like a great place. i just saw an awesome movie, do u know anything about night train to venice?
That's why I listed all the links above. I'm curious to see if anything pops up later in those threads (that is, the ones which haven't already been deleted or have discussions like this one).

Is this really so boring of a place that y'all spend all these posts analyzing a spammer's intentions and plan? Countries have been overthrown with less analysis than this.

Thanks, CT! You really are amazing in your willingness to respond helpfully to any and all!

You will note that the overthrow of a country requires considerably more equipment. And someone to dig the jacks.
