We had our first snow today in Boston. Nothing that will stick, and honestly nothing that I'll be happy about in a couple of months. But for today, watching the flakes drift by the window, with Thanksgiving and Christmas on the way, it feels wonderful.

My girls have short-sleeved Christmas dresses. (I do have sweaters available if the morning is chilly. But I expect them not to need them by afternoon, if that.)

sigh... I sometimes miss the cooler weather, especially around the holidays. After all these years, I still find it odd to celebrate Thanksgiving in shorts and rubber slippers and to have to open the windows to cool off after setting up the Christmas tree.

Early snow in New England this year. We got about an inch this afternoon.
The prematurity cuts into my enjoyment of Fall foliage, but my wife put on some jazzy winter carols on Pandora (Let it Snow, Baby It's Cold Outside, Winter Wonderland, etc.), I'm about to pour myself a cup of Stephen's Mint Cocoa, which ameliorates the disappointment a bit.

The Pats/Titans game was beautiful for the snow (if not, perhaps, for the Titans' quality of play...).
And around here, it'll get into the 30s overnight! I get to wear a sweatshirt again - it's finally cold enough.

We got some frost up in the mountains of Utah one or two weeks ago, it's gone now. We're between the high 50's and low 70's these days.

I don't know if l'hiver is jamais bon -- but for the most part I agree. Growing up in NY and then living in Utah for a while gave me pretty much all the winters I need. Even Northern Virginia had more snow/ice/cold than I enjoy. (Of course, the fact that they are totally unequipped to deal with wintry conditions on the roads probably has a lot to do with that - not to mention that I never had a garage while there and always had to scrape off my car and the locks would freeze. Oh yeah, and the public transportation years -- cold wind-tunnel-like bus stops. Nope, don't miss that.)
We had our first frost here in Georgia last night and I'm rather happy that it doesn't tend to get much colder than this for too long at a time.
I wouldn't mind a white Christmas, though.

Hard to see the first snow as anything but a hassle this year. Driving through the flurry to the hospital to visit my ailing wife, bald tires slipping on the wet roads; digging out this morning in time to get my daughter to school; facing the wind-whipped flakes while herding all three kids on their way through a busy, wet, slushy Christmas mall parking lot.
My only joy was imagining my daughter's happiness today at recess, playing with her friends in the fresh snow. A thin candle to beat back against the cold dark, but at least it's something.

I remember as a kid, growing up in northern MN, forgetting what a curb looked like by March. I remember learning how to shovel the walk the efficient way: one layer at a time until you get down to the cement, then move forward a foot and start over. I remember an ice storm we had once that made half the trees in the city explode, including the one in our front yard. My first time driving a car was in about a foot of snow. Some people embrace the winter; while it can be beautiful, I’ve never looked forward to it.
So why did I move up to SE Idaho? It wasn’t for the weather. We’ve had tons of snow since before Thanksgiving and after a nice melt and refreeze, now there’s a nice, thick layer of ice over everything.
I was bagging my groceries at the store and heard a woman at the next checkstand over, who apparently hailed from the Northeast, smugly commenting on how people here in Idaho didn’t know real winter weather. Ha. The only difference is, ours just doesn’t make the evening news.

Where do you live, St. George? We have plenty of slush and muck in the Salt Lake valley. Snow, rain, snow, rain, rinse and repeat. But I haven't seen 70 degrees . . . .

It has been raining non-stop here in Vegas this week, but I believe it is supposed to stop this afternoon. Sadly it didn't get cold enough for snow. Even with all the rain we are staying at 55 degree highs, high 40's for the lows.
I love the rain, but sadly since it only rains once or twice a year people just don't know how to drive.

The snow came in the morning this year, big fluffy flakes falling from a colorless sky. Watching my three-year-old daughter standing near the trees in back of our house, just standing, with her tongue tentatively stuck out to catch the snow between sky and earth, the evergreens behind her dusted white over green; it's going to be a wonderful winter.

Still wondering when it's going to snow and stick. We had some snow in mid-October but it's long gone. Man, just 2 years ago I was having to shovel the driveway every morning just to be able to get the car out.
