Need I say "major spoilers"?

Hmmm. Guess they're keeping Reepicheep's look a secret.

Some of it looked pretty good.

But there's no way they look only a year older.

I'll have to reread Caspian, but some of that looked a bit off, or at least, really expanded upon, but I liked the flowers and Lucy, that was a good visual from the book.

Looks pretty, though. I see they moved forward the meeting between the Pevensies and Prince Caspian quite a bit.

The main problem with adapting Prince Caspian is that it's the big "Walk, Talk, and Flashback" book out of the Chronicles. All of the lead characters don't even meet up until the climax, and then there's not much left before the book is over.

So yes...things have been reshuffled and in many cases greatly expanded on for the screen.

The River God looks awesome. That was always one of my favorite parts of the book. [Cool]

Caspian is not my favorite either. It's kinda way down there with The Last Battle and The Silver Chair, which totally frightened me when my mother first read it to me and I never quite got over it enough to enjoy the book as much as I might otherwise have done.

But this looks cool!

Horse and His Boy was always near the top of my list.

Caspian might be one of the few times when I won't complain too much if they switch things around. But it'll still depend. It can't be TOO wonky.

I don't really get how it fit in with the other story's.

Ironic that The Horse and His Boy (possibly the most cinematic out of all seven books) is the one that we may have to wait some time for.

I wonder if they'll make The Horse and His Boy (also my favorite) when the Pevensies are old enough to play their parts...

Posted by Lyrhawn (Member # 7039) on :

Argh! They don't have to wait for the same kids to play the roles, they can get older people that bear a resemblence.

Dawn Treader is obviously next, but after that, the last four could really come in any order, and frankly I think Magician's Nephew would be a boring movie, and Last Battle an extremely weird movie, so I'd bet Silver Chair and Horse and His Boy will come next. I figure 2012 at the latest for H&HB. I might get The Hobbit and Dawn Treader in the same year, 2010ish.

This is going to be so awesome...

If they keep this up, they're going to redefine the standard for high quality book-to-film adaptations.

Of course, I guess it does help that every Narnia volume is less than 300 pages in length--makes for an easier adaptation, allows you to expand rather than cut out...

Dawn Treader. Now that is going to be sick.

Lyrhawn, why do you think that Magician's Nephew would be a boring movie? I think it's (in some ways) a boring book, but I imagine it could make a very good coming-of-age movie for Digory, if done properly.

I don't know, they MIGHT be able to turn it into a decent movie with a fair bit of editing, but it just doesn't seem like there's much to it. Lots of walking and talking, nowhere near the action that people will be used to from Narnia movies. And the ending is pretty anticlimatic. Don't get me wrong, I think it's interesting to see how it all started, I just don't think it's nearly as conventional as the others as far as a beginning, a climax, a resolution, and anything really exciting happening throughout.

I don't doubt they'll try to turn it into a movie, but it won't be anything like the others, which isn't necessarily bad, but people expecting to see more of the same would be pretty disappointed.

I'm curious as to why you think it'd be a better movie than book? I don't discount the possibility, you're right, sometimes mildly boring books can be made into pretty decent movies, but I'm mixed on whether or not I think this is one of them.

I think The Magician's Nephew would make a good film, but not a very good action-oriented fantasy adventure...all of the conflicts in it are largely internal, save for Jadis' rampage in Edwardian London.

I could see it work, but it would need lots of care and effort.

They'll juice up the quest for the golden apple, and they'll be a longish creation scene that will have amazing visuals.

I don't know how they'll pull off the song of creation, though. No way that can live up to what's in my head.

If they do The Last Battle, I hope they leave out the part about Susan.

Posted by 777 (Member # 9506) on :

For politically correct reasons, I have no doubt that they will. I mean, they don't want to have feminist activists boycotting the movie, do they?

From a Christianity-biased point of view, however, I thought the part about Susan was awfully accurate, particularly in today's world. And since Lewis wrote the book with a heavy bias in favor of Christianity, there's a lot I have to agree with him on.

So for the Christian moviegoer, there's a lot to look forward to when The Last Battle is finally released. For the non-Christian or secularist individual, it'll probably be one of the worst--possibly even a little preachy.

H&HB was my least favorite of the series.

I think PC looks awesome.

As a non-Christian reader, The Last Battle was my favourite Narnia book.

Posted by 777 (Member # 9506) on :

I'm sorry. I didn't mean to offend. It's just that I've heard from some non-Christian readers that the last book was a bit too blatantly Christian for them. I honestly thought that it was the one book that was most likely to offend.

Again, I apologize.

My 14 year old (fifteen in two weeks) daughter's response to the trailer:

"Hello! Caspian's HOT! AND he has an accent. I'm there."

My response: "Griffins!"

The really cool part is that Reepicheep's tribe of warrior mice will be riding most of the gryphons. [Big Grin]

Holy crap. They could all be incredible if done right. Jadis' rampage in The Magicians Nephew would be awesome if the really blew it up, like in the book so much of it occurs secondhand. But the exploration of the Worlds, and the World between Worlds, and Charn would look awesome. I can picture them looking out over the ruins as Jadis starts describing how "glorious" it used to be, with the groaning of the slaves and all that, and then they could just have an interlude where they actually go into some of the drama leading up to Jadis using the Deplorable Word... awesome.

The Horse and His Boy could be the best of the series I think.

I'm just pumped for Voyage of the Dawn Treader. That one is my favorite most days of the week.

What do you want to glimpse in trailer 2?

Posted by SteveRogers (Member # 7130) on :

It's been so long since I read Prince Caspian that I honestly don't remember any specifics. I need to re-read the whole series.

Reepicheep is lame. Puddleglum: now there's an action hero.

Posted by Lyrhawn (Member # 7039) on :

There will be no dissing Reepicheep in this thread!

Puffy and I will pummel you!

Posted by Belle (Member # 2314) on :

All I want to see is Reep. That's all I care about.

Oh, except more griffins. And my daughter wants more Caspian hotness.

I think The Magician's Nephew could be good. Especially if they put a wig on Bill Nighy and cast him as Uncle Andrew.

I haven't read Narnia for almost 3 years. What was the part about Susan in the Last Battle?

Posted by Lisa (Member # 8384) on :

She grew up, so she was cast out of paradise forever. Barf.

I'd barf at that, too.

Of course, it's not what actually happens in the book.

No...she stopped believing in Narnia, so she wasn't on the train with the other "Friends of Narnia".

Her final fate was never revealed by Lewis one way or the other. In letters to concerned fans, he did indicate that Susan life could go in any direction.

"Growing Up" is not given as the reason, though some well-known modern fantasy authors like Phillip Pullman and Neil Gaiman have expressed their interpretation that such was what Lewis "really" meant by the offhand mention that Susan was largely concerned with parties and fashion.

(I think both are mistaken for saying that "Caring only about parties=Having Sex and Growing Up". I think they're reaching beyond what the author intended.)

Susan denies Narnia and is therefore no longer part of it.

Married people (who had children) are seen in Aslan's Country. Including the Pevensie's own parents.
