December tentpoles have tended more towards fantasy flicks, musicals, and Oscar bait than to holiday fare in recent years.
(And, oddly, horror. Hey, Sweeney combines both horror and a musical in one!)

My first exposure to Sweeny Todd was at something like four years old. We were at a hotel somewhere, PBS was mid-way through a broadcast of a stage version, and I think one of my parents said something like "Oh, Angela Lansbury, this will be nice."
GYAAAAH!!!
The combination of Depp, Carter, and Burton sounds like something worth watching. I'll be interested to see how they fare.

I'm extremely disappointed. Once I was reassured that they were keeping the songs, my main issue with it becoming a movie was the lack of intermission. (No intermission means no audience walking out and humming "Have a Little Priest" while they munch on things from the concession stand. )
Sweeney is supposed to start sad but SUBTLE and gradually build to more and more horribly horrifying. (Yeah, I know what the opening song is like. But singing that is very different, IMO, from this.)
Drops of blood failing from the sky? Blood running in rivulets and rivers?
>_< GAH!
*sigh* Given the makeup, I guess I shouldn't be surprised that "subtle" is out.

Has Burton ever done "subtle"?
People hire him if they want a lot of high concept style. Expect no subtlety.

You forget that they all worked on The Corpse Bride together. One of my favorites. I'm a huge Burton fan though, so I may be biased.

I don't mind the beginning, but I (in a truly shocking moment of musical ignorance) don't really know that much about Sweeney -- i've never gotten into the music, except the opening song, and have actually never seen it performed.
The thing that bothered me the most was how bloody fake (pun intended) all that blood looked. Haven't we come farther in CGI?

I'm with Rivka on this one. These opening credits are like a giant spoiler! I saw the show on Broadway last year and it DID start out subtle and got progressivly more horrible and more morbidly funny.
Oh well, I haven't been disappointed by either Depp or Burton, or Bonham Carter before, so I'm still excited for this.

I did too. It's the sort of style I've come to expect out of Burton. And although I've not known anything about Sweeney Todd, I'm most definitely intrigued.

I didn't like it any better for that, but I definitely assumed the bizarre texture was deliberate.

I haven't been disappointed yet, but I'm worried about this one... when the film was first released, the reviews were so bad that they had to take it back and re-edit it.
I feel that people who are already familiar with the musical will be disappointed, and those who are not will probably like it.

There is always love for Alan Rickman. I know this will sound cliche, but he's the best Snape I could have ever imagined. Of all the actors thus far in the Harry Potter movies, the ones that lived up 100% to my mind's expectations are Rickman, Helena Bonham Carter (Bellatrix) and Evanna Lynch (Luna Lovegood).
Anyway, I can't wait to hear Alan Rickman singing a duet with Johnny Depp!
