The teen and adult audience who didn't go to The Golden Compass turned out in droves to see Will Smith and his faithful fido fight mutant vampires.
The family audience that didn't care for CGI talking polar bears couldn't wait to see CGI singing chipmunks.
While TGC is doing much better worldwide than it is domestically, dropping from 41 million to 9 million in one week is probably raising a few eyebrows over at New Line.

Calvin and Hobbes is not allowed to be a piece of Hollywood-pop trash.
If ever made into a movie, it should be a sincere and funny indie piece of art.
Hollywood sucks the life from things like this.

It's not that far fetched. Hell, they made Garfield in to TWO movies, and that's a comic strip about NOTHING.

Garfield was heavily merchandised from the beginning. Watterson never allowed any merchandising of C&H. I think we're safe from a C&H movie as long as Watterson lives and breathes.

The main reason I really don't care about seeing "The Golden Compass", is that they showed the first five minutes online. Not the very fact that they did it, but when I watched it I had no idea whatsoever of what was going on.

I'd like to see "I am legend", although I've heard that his dog dies, and I think I'd have liked it otherwise.

Porter speaks the truth. With all Watterson has said against merchandising C&H it would be insane for him to consent to a movie. Although he did say he was not fully against a Calvin and Hobbes animated series as he thinks the medium of animation is beautiful. He just was not sure Calvin and Hobbes would translate well into an animated series or movie.
If he was heavily involved I could see Watterson MAYBE giving the OK to a movie.

I'm a little surprised that GC had THAT big of a dropoff. It'll need surpassingly impressive international sales I think to justify making a second one, for many reasons. I don't think everyone who saw the first one will see the second one, and I think as the books get wackier as the go on, they'll be harder to make into good movies.
"I Am Legend" on the other hand seems to have blown away even the high end estimates of opening weekend sales.
