Seriously. I had so much fun playing this the other night. Guitar Hero pales in comparison to this game.

What's one measly guitar against a guitar, a bass, a drum set, and someone on lead vocals?

It's a super fun party game. And what's also cool is if you wanted to turn it into a straight karaoke machine you could use it for that. And it'd probably make you a better singer too. I'm also betting someone could seriously learn how to drum by playing that game enough.

The only downside was that there weren't enough songs, but apparently they'll be releasing packages of songs available for download.

I've already downloaded a good 10-15 songs from x-box LIVE marketplace. Some of the new songs are pretty sweet. I'll take a look and put together a list of the downloadables for you.

don't bother, I don't even own it!

I was just blown away by how fun it was.

Between games like this and the Wii, is there a future for standard controller video games?

Posted by Little_Doctor (Member # 6635) on :

Are you kidding? Assassin's Creed and Call of Duty 4 for x-box may be the two best games I've ever played. Some people, like myself, just aren't comfortable with the wii controller either.

We've got Rock Band and Guitar Hero III slated to appear on Christmas morning. I'm looking forward to rocking around the Christmas tree, as it were.

ViolentREMs is my 360 tag. Add me. RockBand is awesome.

I read somewhere that the new innovations in technology aren't really about better visuals or sounds, but rather the interaction one has with the technology. That's a lot of why the iphone has been so popular. And multitouch screens. It's a new way of interacting. There's only so much you can do with increased graphics and audio.

Us too! My boyfriend, upon hearing that my brothers were getting both, asked how early he could come over for food and rocking. Should be interesting! Probably the only thing that will get to me to sing in front of people.

I'm excited. Some guys got together last night to pass around the guitar and kick back some beers. I, the only girl in the room, was declared THE guitar hero of the night. I was so proud!

My wife is actually a drummer......

My sister-in-law just got Rock Band. It's been really great fun.

We're up to Medium level for everyone as the drums is the most difficult part if no one has any experience with them. It's really awesome after you've been playing for a bit because you can see how much better you've gotten at it.

DDR, Guitar Hero, and Rock Band are the first games to seriously make me consider buying a game console. (Well, not counting Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo, which is also incidentally almost as fun to say as to play.)

My little brothers are teaching me how to play Guitar Hero over the holidays. The youngest, a guitar virtuoso, has zero patience with my lamitude.

I've not enjoyed playing DDR on the home flimsy pad that you can buy for it.

I know they sell the hard platforms like you'd use in the arcade, but they'll like $100 + shipping, and the shipping is the killer. Maybe when I have more free money I'll splurge on something like that. Frankly I'd rather spend $100 on that than $100 on a treadmill. Both are good cardio, but only one is fun.

I remember this arcade game that was like DDR but for your hands. There were four interference fields and you had to wave your hands through them in time to the things on the screen, like DDR. It was fun, but I haven't seen it anywhere since.

I have a friend who is getting Rock Band, and I look forward to playing. I LOVE Guitar Hero. I'll probably get GHIII when it's readily available and cheaper. I'd get Rock Band, but I generally don't have enough people around who are gamers who'd play.

What songs are downloadable?

I'm getting it tomorrow. [Big Grin]

this game looks like a great party game. i was never that good at playing guitar hero, but ive only ever played it a couple times. the $170 that Rockband costs is just more than i would care to spend, and i can't justify asking for it for christmas. this is one of the few times i wish i had a 12 year old sibling right about now. Im sure there will be loads of family bands starting tomorrow! lookout Jackson 5.

We got this early last week and have been having a blast with it.

I had a very strange moment the other day... I was talking with my wife and mentioned that this game's song selection would be perfect if only they'd included Ballroom Blitz.

I ran across it yesterday during solo play. I love this game.

You have Rock Band and you haven't invited me to your house yet? [Wink]

I also have a cold that has ambitions to be the next plague.

Also, check your email!

Also, also: Does anyone have a band name of which they're especially proud? Jules and I are currently the only human members of Zombie Beethoven.

Quad-edit: Lyrhawn, the downloadable selection is pretty great. You can find a full list here, but highlights (for me) include:

Buddy Holly
My Iron Lung
Roxanne
Heroes

We went in halvsies with a friend a few weeks ago and got it for the 360. Last night, two of our friends were over and we had a great time jamming out. We also all agreed that it's fun to watch the drums pwn each guy in turn. It's the kick pedal that's the killer and the drums stay hard even on easy until your hands can be separated from your foot.

How does this game work on xbox live?

Posted by Bokonon (Member # 480) on :

It works well on live, though I've just done some solo battles. There is no online Band World Tour, just band quickplay.

My friends and I named our band "Knuckle Sandwich." I thought it was pretty good.

as a joke with a bunch of dorks, i told them to start a band called Unstable Ping. maybe they will carry it over to their video games now. i cant wait to bring it back up in conversation.

Absolutely. The market for casual and party games is certainly exploding, but the fact that BioShock and Mass Effect both did respectable numbers this year gives me hope for the future of narrative-driven games that at least try to ask meaningful questions about the human condition.

That isn't a value judgment -- I think Guitar Hero is great and will be buying Rock Band early next year. I've already picked up one copy of Rock Band for a friend.

Lyrhawn: FYI, Red Octane makes some very decent soft pads that are significantly less money and, because they're reinforced with harder foam, do not slip around and actually have a tactile sensation to them.

Posted by Lyrhawn (Member # 7039) on :

Any idea where I can find them eros? The ones I have do exactly that, slip around, making them one short step up from useless.

Posted by erosomniac (Member # 6834) on :

These. Just search "ignition pad" on eBay and you'll find tons. When I got mine four or five years ago, they were $79.99 for two with a copy of whichever PS2 DDR was current at the time.

Edit: and yeah, tons of them are off brand, but all of the off brand ones I've tried labeled "ignition pad" have performed leaps and bounds better than the standard slippery POS that comes bundled with the game.

Yes, Ignition pads are probably the best soft pads on the market, but I've had mine for years and now they're dead but I'm excited because I found out I'm getting 2 cobalt fluxes!! I'm also pretty sure we're getting GH3 so this christmas is gonna rock (in more ways than one)!

I recall seeing some DIY conversions that are pretty cheap and easy to perform on inexpensive foam pads. Something along the lines of attaching it to a hard backing, like plywood.

I was able to get a Red Octane pad at Best Buy; I don't know if they're as ubiquitious in your area as they seem to have become in mine.

If your drum kit is making too much noise, you might try this out:

Rock Band Crafts

Looks fairly cheap and the results look nice! I'm going to be doing this sometime this weekend, as the drums make it difficult to hear Jules' singing.
