I heard this on NPR this morning and had the same reaction.

Thank you for changing the title, Pooka.

-o-

EH lived, as far as I know, a great life. I wish his loved ones well in their time of grief.

Now I'm curious as to what the title was.

Two or three months ago we were touring the atomic museum in Albuquerque when one of the guides (a man who had worked on the Manhattan Project) told us that Paul Tibbets, the pilot of the Enola Gay, had died the previous day.

I had the same reaction--I had no idea that he was still alive. But that one barely even made the news, which really surprised me. I had to do some real digging when I got home to verify that it was correct.

Also, that article corrected two points of misunderstanding for me. I was always under the impression that Edmund Hillary was a) already dead, and b) English.

Shows what I know.

NPR and BBC News both reported on Tibbets death, if I recall correctly.

::checks their sites::

Yep, they did.

Until you mentioned that you "thought" he was English I still believed that, even though I knew he was dead.

The fact he is from New Zealand makes ALOT of sense. [Smile]

It rings a vague bell with me, but if I'd been asked, I would have guessed English too.

No Edmund, but I realized that the resulting cognitive dissonance would detract from what is a newsworthy discussion.

I think I saw a Nova a few years back about whether a prior expedition had summited prior to Hillary. link

I knew he was from New Zealand but, like many people, I had no idea that he was still alive.
