Is anyone still planning on playing the new game Pirates of the Burning Seas? I know Bok and a few others were considering it, so I picked up the pre-order yesterday. I am loading it now, and will be playing it tomorrow probably. I have a friend at GameStop who gave me the pre-order disk even though I haven't ordered it so I could check it out and give him a review. [Smile]

I'll take that as a no. [Smile]

I played the demo for a few days, but as much as I love pirates, it didn't do much for me. Unless the final version in much improved over the demo I played a month ago, I don't think I'll bother. [Frown]

I read up on how the economy worked in the game and I am very excited. The graphics don't look that good tho.

I really enjoyed ATITD because I liked how the economy worked. The fact that EVERYTHING in the pirates game has to be made by users (from cannon balls to the materials that make ships and the ships themselves) and economic warfare will be a large factor in war has me geeking out.

I will get it when it is released and a little more polished. Realistically I will only play it for a month, but I am looking forward to the release.

I have always wanted to play a MMORPG with a truly player run economic system that works. ATITD does that, but I miss fighting and LOVE pirates!

That sounds really cool. If the game gets decent reviews (or if the things that reviewers complain about don't sound like problems to me) I'll probably give this a try. I'll have to read a bit more about how the economics will work, though.

Here is the Gamespy review I read.

quote:
Everything in Pirates of the Burning Sea is created by the players. That means everything: bandages and rum. Hull braces. The cannonballs your ship fires, the cannons they're fired from, even the very ships players sail... It's all the result of a long daisy-chain of player-run economic activity. A ship, for example, will be constructed by a player-shipbuilder from a number of different components -- sails, spars, masts, a hull. Each of these components, in turn, is crafted from lower-level components. Hulls are created using things like nails, tar and finished boards that are in turn forged and planed from raw iron and logs grown or mined from various islands in the Caribbean area.

quote:
Everything begins with "plots" and "deeds." Every player account is granted to 10 "plots," or spaces with which to build economic buildings using "deeds." A "Granite Quarry" deed, for example, will entitle a player to build a quarry in one of their 10 plots, but only in a port on an island that has granite as a natural resource.
quote:
Groups of players will be able to combine forces to create larger ships and better quality materials. Very large player groups will find that they have enough economic clout to begin to actually influence the political fortunes of the region.

quote:
Goods are more than merely a way for guilds to get bigger, badder ships. Flooding the port of a rival nation with low-priced goods will actually begin to create unrest within that port.
quote:
Eventually the unrest gets to a point where a Battle Royale is declared, a 25-on-25 PvP battle with participants selected by random drawing that determines who will own the port. This allows players who focus on combat and fighting to determine who will control it. Their chances are greatly improved, however, if they use more powerful ships that have to be created by -- wait for it -- those players heavily invested in the economic game.

quote:
. Anyone not willing to put in the time would be better served as a naval officer or a privateer. As it turns out, it's a lot easier to get shot with a cannonball than it is to corner the market on hemp.

The player-controlled economy actually scares me more than entices me. Players have found out how to mess up the economy of almost every MMORPG I've played. It's a neat idea, but I wonder how long it will work effectively.

It sounds like it's ready made for gold-farmers to come in and hose everyone else... unless the developer is going to sell gold too.

That is my fear. However, I read that each play only ever gets 10 plots to work from. Individually they have very little power over the economy, but as a "society" they can be quite influential.

I hope it works. This is my dream style game.

I tried to download the files needed for the pre-order, and they are too big to download. I may buy this game, but it would have been nice to try it out first. [Frown]
