Is the most immature thing that one can possibly imagine. This isn't intended for anyone in particular.

Posted by cassv746 (Member # 11173) on :

I agree. Just because It took a turn away from how the person wanted it to go because said person was in the process of being proved wrong.

Posted by JonHecht (Member # 9712) on :

What are you talking about? I am just making a general statement.

Posted by katharina (Member # 827) on :

THE most immature? I can think of others. Really.

You could spread rumors about people. Dare someone to date someone else. TP someone's house. Trash someone behind their back. Hit someone when angry. Blow off filing taxes because you don't wanna. Get wasted the night before the big whatever. Put up posters with your nemesis's picture with a mustache drawn on it.

Help me out here. What else is extremely immature?

You could continue to beat, again and again, a dead horse that the moderator has asked us to leave alone because there are no plans to change the policy and the continual harping on it is damaging to the community.

No it was because someone requouted my joke question Jon Hecht's sexuality, the question of copywrite infringement I am indifferent to, I don't care. However the threat of reporting it to my school though however is what prompted the delete button.

Posted by cassv746 (Member # 11173) on :

Oh, makes more sense to me now.

Posted by brojack17 (Member # 9189) on :

I don't see anything wrong with TP'ing someone's house. [Smile]

I started two new threads that are clearly mayfly, but I don't plan on deleting them because someone may search them someday.

Why? You claim to have done nothing illegal and spoke of confirmation that 1300 printed pages would not generally be considered abuse of printing privileges. Are you uncomfortable with what you did?

Posted by vonk (Member # 9027) on :

If I realized I was discussing in a thread a crime I had committed and someone mentioned reporting it, I would delete it too. Of course, I wouldn't discuss any of the various nefarious (often hilarious) crimes I've committed here or anywhere.

Edited for clarity.

No, but I do not want trouble the technicians say it is okay it is my right, however as I said I do not want to risk my continued privilages in printing 1400 pages of source material. What ramifactions from nothing, or slap on the wrist to the possibility of termination of my enrollment it is not a risk given my family situation that I am going to take.

Being caught in the act is one thing its easy to come up with excuses and go scott free, risking my education due to some sort of some sort of personal rivalry between two largely amonynous forum members is another.

Posted by adfectio (Member # 11070) on :

if you aren't doing anything illegal (or wrong, if you want to clarify), then you should not have to make excuses.

Makes me think you really do know there is something wrong with it. (morally, legally, or otherwise)

And if that's the case, why would you brag about it?

Posted by Primal Curve (Member # 3587) on :

Of course, you could also not risk your education by illegially copying a work copyrighted in another country and covered by your own country's copyright law by using school resources. I found plenty of precedent for the University dumping you for doing it. I think the copyright law is pretty clear, but I bet your school's copying policy is MUCH clearer and you've probably violated it.

It's one thing to print 1400 pages. It's something else entirely if those 1400 pages are, say, the entire Harry Potter series (in small print with small margins).

This. Again.

*sigh*

Yes, certain posters are extremely childish.

It's news to no one. Just ignore them and they'll go away.

Posted by aspectre (Member # 2222) on :

Get real. Except for PapaJanitor's admonition, there was nothing worth saving in that thread or Blayne's previously deleted thread or JohnHecht's locked tread or in adfectio's reposting/thread or in this thread.

What is it with you guys? Ya think shouting "I'M AN IDIOT!!!" over and over and over again somehow proves you are tough and smart?
Cuz with only a handful of exceptions that's all anybody on those threads did, toss insult. Not even witty rejoinders, just a loada "LOOK AT ME! LOOK AT ME! I CAN TROLL TOO!"

A thread that offends you gets deleted, and all you can think of is reposting it just to continue the flamewar.
How much more self-defeating can you get?
Short of literally ramming your face against a concrete wall repeatedly until you blackout, I mean.
Then again, ya'd probably think that's "manly" too.

Curious, it's like phases of the moon or something. I got in trouble on a different forum earlier today. Some enterprising student of the social sciences should write a paper about it: "Periodic cycles in incidences of trolling on internet discussion fora".

Posted by Mucus (Member # 9735) on :

Ack.
I've had a bit of time to calm down. Some things about this whole copyright infringement + Blayne deal have seriously rubbed me the wrong way for a number of reasons. I'm not going to list them because that would be somewhat of a cop-out.

In any case, I'll come right out and say that my snark/sarcasm has seriously run over the limit and I'm sorry to have contributed to this whole affair and involved the rest of you not-at-fault.

Sorry.

It's like every time I go away for a week, something quasi-exciting happens and I only get to see the tail end of it. [Frown]

I'm in the same boat as MightyCow. Except for me it's like I go away for a day and come back and have no idea what is going on.

Posted by JonHecht (Member # 9712) on :

Alright, perhaps we should finish off a bad day by closing the last remaining thread on this topic. PJ?

Posted by MightyCow (Member # 9253) on :

Just delete it. You know you want to [Evil]

I just wanted to play some ruddin' D&D. I blame this whole incident on 3rd Edition.

*sigh* Not checking Hatrack daily means I feel so out of the loop sometimes.

Please delete this thread?

Try 3.5, it makes ranger leveling easier early on and doesn't allow anyone to delete threads [Smile]

Could you quote where PJ has asked us not to discuss thread deleting? Because as best I can determine, he has simply commented that it's not changing, but that it's expressly allowed to talk about it (within the TOS, of course).

Moreover, the repeated comments by people who think thread deleting isn't rude urging those who do to stop discussing it smacks of the people who get their way telling the rest of us to shut up about it.

Talking about deleted threads is allowed. If it is destructive to the community, then it's an example of how things that are allowed - like say, thread deleting - can be damaging to the community.

Thread deletion is absolutely damaging to the community. I get that the moderators have decided that they consider it less damaging than not having it. That doesn't mean that individual instances of thread deleting aren't also damaging.

We don't restrict commentary about posting behavior to only those things prohibited by the TOS. So please stop trying to make an exception about the topic where you feel strongly and where you've already gotten your way.

Unless I'm missing some sort of joke, aren't you just insult tossing in this thread? Maybe?

Couldn't muster anything to actually say about what I posted so you resorted to your usual lying about other people's motives, huh?

How do I ask PJ to lock this?

Posted by aspectre (Member # 2222) on :

Just hit the whistle icon or the Report Post next to it (located under your posting) and ask.

Hey, this is the most productive discussion on this topic in like...a whole day!

Let's give it a moment or two.

EDIT:

I've changed my position on the subject of deleting threads somewhat. I used to not care so much. Then a certain poster displayed a unique inclination to delete threads whenever he received criticism. Aside from whether the criticism was correct or not, the utilization of the delete button became a form of censorship. Not complete censorship, since the poster couldn't remove threads created by others treating the same subject; but a smaller, still-ugly censorial tendency seemed to crop up.

So... while I still don't feel like it's verboten to delete threads, and I don't necessarily agree with some other's expressed feelings about WHY thread deletion is so terrible...I do feel that deleting threads because they are critical of the initial poster is wrong, especially when it becomes a tendency.

I used to hate deleting threads. I said numerous times that there was no excuse for censoring other people's words, and that just because you had the ability to did not give you the right to.

But now that the consensus about deleting is so loud and ornery I find myself loving the idea of thread deletion. I sneak in here at night and start a half dozen threads only to delete them immediately.

It's such a rush that I've hardly slept all week.

I'm such a contrarian.

It seems obvious from the last two posts that JT is the person Scott is referring to.
