Look back at a lot of the classic stories, and they center around a guy stalking a girl. "Candide" and "Romeo and Juliet" are just two examples.

Now, they don't strike us as stalking because the women reciprocate. But when was the last time you were talking to yourself on your balcony and found some guy you just met staring at you?

Indeed. I'm in the middle of reading Love in the Time of Cholera, the perfect example of this sort of thing.

I just read a bio of the Beatles (Shout: The Beatles and Their Generation, quite good), and there's a bit in it about the "Apple Scruffs" -- obsessed fans who'd stand vigil outside Abbey Road, Paul's house, and other Beatles hangouts.

The Beatles seem to've mostly been annoyed by them, but also had some fondness for them. (Less fond after Paul announced his marriage to Linda, and some of the Apple Scruffs freaked out and started trashing his house.)

But it was all part of '60s weirdness, and not seen as creepy. The fans didn't become homicidal until much later. [Frown]

It's so true though. The good ol' days of stalking are over. Romantic comedies are sketchy if you think about them. 27 Dresses is an example of one of the most recent ones. Silly romantic comedies.

I did once have a guy who was barely paying attention to me at a bar immediately do a double-take after i called him a "scruffy-looking Nerf Herder." He asked for my number within the next 10 minutes. That's kind of an inspirational story that sometimes guys do like the snark. Or maybe just mentions of Star Wars [Smile]
