...in 1950s romance comics it was!

"Not the kind I've got in mind, bub!"

*shudder*

Wrong on so many levels...

I wonder if that's what happened to this guy.

Posted by Synesthesia (Member # 4774) on :

it would be funnier if she actually sent him a gate.
Or handed him one.

Look back at a lot of the classic stories, and they center around a guy stalking a girl. "Candide" and "Romeo and Juliet" are just two examples.

Now, they don't strike us as stalking because the women reciprocate. But when was the last time you were talking to yourself on your balcony and found some guy you just met staring at you?

is this a can of mace I see before me,
The handle towards my hand? Come, let me clutch thee.
I have thee not, and yet I see thee still.
Art thou not, non-fatal vision, sensible
To feeling as to sight? or art thou but
A self-defense product of the mind, legal in most states,
Proceeding from the accosted female persuasion?
I see thee yet, in detritus of purse
As he towards which now I draw.
Thou marshall'st me beyond the use of the rape whistle;
And such an instrument I doth use to blind.

Indeed. I'm in the middle of reading Love in the Time of Cholera, the perfect example of this sort of thing.

Samp, that was awesome. [Big Grin]

The difference between "romantic" and "creepy" is how you feel about the guy.

Pix, soooo true.

Speed-- I'd love to see a movie like THAT.

Samp-- [ROFL] [ROFL]

I just read a bio of the Beatles (Shout: The Beatles and Their Generation, quite good), and there's a bit in it about the "Apple Scruffs" -- obsessed fans who'd stand vigil outside Abbey Road, Paul's house, and other Beatles hangouts.

The Beatles seem to've mostly been annoyed by them, but also had some fondness for them. (Less fond after Paul announced his marriage to Linda, and some of the Apple Scruffs freaked out and started trashing his house.)

But it was all part of '60s weirdness, and not seen as creepy. The fans didn't become homicidal until much later. [Frown]

This seems like a good place to post this shirt.

George must not have minded them so terribly, eh?

quote:
You've been stood around for years
Seen my smiles and touched my tears
How its been a long, long time
And how you've been on my mind, my apple scruffs

Apple scruffs, apple scruffs
How I love you, how I love you

-- "Apple Scruffs" (from All Things Must Pass)

It's so true though. The good ol' days of stalking are over. Romantic comedies are sketchy if you think about them. 27 Dresses is an example of one of the most recent ones. Silly romantic comedies.

Unfortunately, this distinction is often made even in the act of saying 'hello'. [Razz]

That's really rather cute.

Javert: Men judge women by their looks, women judge men by their looks. That's just how we all evolved.

Yeah--if I went for overtly funny shirts I'd buy it. I don't, though.

I know. Doesn't mean I can't complain about it. [Big Grin]

Javert: yeah, cuz it really does suck. Back when I was single, I'd have loved it if a man and/or woman had loved me for my snark instead of having their heads turned by the hottie.

I did once have a guy who was barely paying attention to me at a bar immediately do a double-take after i called him a "scruffy-looking Nerf Herder." He asked for my number within the next 10 minutes. That's kind of an inspirational story that sometimes guys do like the snark. Or maybe just mentions of Star Wars [Smile]

Leonide, that is possibly the best pickup line I've ever heard. I'm totally using that the next time I'm flirting with a guy. It weeds out the non-geeks. Perfect.

Bah, they are all just picturing you in a Pricess Leia Slave costume.

Posted by TomDavidson (Member # 124) on :

Yeah, it has nothing to do with snark. It's basically like wearing a "Han Shot First" T-shirt.

Posted by Leonide (Member # 4157) on :

Well, the point remains that he didn't care about me physically, obviously, or he would've already been flirting. The comment, snarky or not (and it was intended snarkily!) caught his attention, rather than my looks [Smile]

What exact moment is that about?

Posted by Corwin (Member # 5705) on :

Nevermind, it has its own Wikipedia page. [Smile]

Edit: And apparently, Lucas admits it too in the end: Han shot first.

Oh, there's no problem, except that one strange guy who's picturing you in the furry Wookie get up.

I don't get it, what's with the "han shot first" thing? Of course he shot first if he didn't he would've died....
