I twisted my ankle, so I'm taking it easy today. Flipping through channels, I came across that new Spider-Man cartoon. The character designs are quite different from what I expected. The nostrils are drawn to look like perfectly triangular chunks taken out of the sides of everyone's nose. The characters and world all have a flat, cut from construction paper look.

Also, Peter Parker has a beauty mark. Or something.

Changed the channel again when I saw that since Gwen Stacy is a science geek in this version, they made her frumpy and plain. Because it's impossible for a girl to be good at science -and- attractive, don't you know?

Indeed. But once they start to see the error of their ways, and become more girly and experience an IQ drop, then suddenly they undergo quite a transformation. It's classic.

Puffy, apparently this new series is being headed by the guy who was the main creative force behind that wonderful Disney show "Gargoyles." He talks about it here, among other things:

Loved Gargoyles, but this Spidey cartoon didn't look so great.

Edit:

Reading his remarks, he seems aware of the odd art style choices and Smart Gwen=Plain Gwen thing, but doesn't seem eager to hear dissent on them. So, I guess I'm done. [Smile]

Oh man. I hadn't heard the new theme song. That's so delightfully cheesy. [Big Grin]

Ha! I just started watching it (WB cartoon...*shiver*...didn't like their new Batman at all, though I didn't watch very many). But I DID like the Gargoyle cameo right in the beginning, heh.

Sounds like Weissman is using Keith David again!

[Smile] Sure.

I liked the rendering of the iconic image of Spiderman swinging with the random thug-type guy tucked under his right arm during the credits. Actually, I like that they worked in a lot of the early Spiderman stuff--that dumb light, The Enforcers, Electro, The Vulture, Doc Oc...nicely done. I don't particularly care for the art, but hey.

I thought they nailed Spidey's wisecracking perfectly.

But I've only watched the first 5 minutes.
