I don't read political threads until they're locked. Actually, this applies to most threads that involve serious topics. There's just something about reading seriously vitriolic responses that makes me more interested in the subject matter.

Thankfully for me, this has been happening more and more recently - I'm nearly caught up on current world events!

< / heavy sarcasm >

But seriously, what the heck? I guess I'll just ride this wave of antagonism out like all the others in the past eight-and-a-half years I've been here. I do love me some good old-fashioned ring composition. [Wink]

Heh! I was just thinking the same thing.

There's something about seeing that little Lock icon that makes me want to jump in and see what all the screaming is about.

If you don't read the threads until after they're locked I might come off a bit prophetic. [Razz]

I thought we should have a locked thread hall of fame. Kinda like the landmark thread.

I have to admit, I kind of feel like a lot of the locking is the result of one or two people in particular, who shall remain unnamed - but they know who they are, going aggressively confrontational and uncivil.

There's only so much everyone else can take of being insulted, told to shut up, frack off, etc before they start responding in kind. And the result is a locked thread.

I really don't care how strongly you hold your beliefs or how much you feel like they're being attacked, if they are being civilly and conversationally attacked that's just the risk of having a discussion. And if you don't want to have a civil discussion about something which may involve seeing your beliefs called into question then stay out of threads on that topic.

This is directed at a few people in particular who know who they are.

I don't think it's fair really to ban a topic from the forum when it's only one or two posters in particular causing problems with that topic. And unless I'm missing something that's really what it seems like has been happening here. It'd make much more sense to simply ban those posters from the topic until they learn to be civil.

I normally don't, but I was able to tell that it was going to be locked by looking at the title.

That's the easiest part Jon. Does it have the word "Israel" or "gay" or maybe "feminist" or "God." The occurrence of these words in titles ups the lockage by huge margins

The "take it elsewhere" remark seemed to be pointed at me particularly. Anyway, I find the Middle East issue to be one of the most important moral conundrums of our times and one which we must all face. It's easy to be indifferent to it for the sake of avoiding the unpleasantness that inevitably comes with taking sides--and I find Papa Janitor's remarks encourage this sort of intellectual cowardice.

And who cares that one particular person was spectacularly unhinged in that thread. It certainly didn't get in the way of all the productive discussion.

Well, I disagree Somalian. I don't think he was pointing any fingers at you, as the starter of the thread. We've had civil discussions centered on this topic before.

If people cannot discuss an issue in a civil manner on Hatrack, then perhaps it should be discussed elsewhere - there are many avenues on the Internet where less-than-civil discourse can freely occur.

If anything it's what I don't understand about what goes on here. Oh well.

I'll just say what I say to some of the teenagers who work for me.
