Mother's Day is coming, and I want to get my aunts something. They are so good to me, and they are very sweet. They are also wildly competitive, so it needs to be the same present for each or someone is going to be sad.

They live in Texas and I live in Virginia, so it needs to be something I can mail. They like to read, I think, but not science fiction or deep stuff. They both love gardening, but have all the spades and gardening gloves their hearts desire. They have kids, but the kids have left the house.

Any suggestions?

Could you get a light novel or two for all of them, and then email or write each other about your reactions as a sort of long-distance book club? That way it's a gift & a way to keep up communication lines.

I'd suggest The Time Traveler's Wife because it's mostly light, but deep enough to satisfy, and everyone I know who's read it loves it. I have some others to recommend if you'd like, as well.

Also, the gift of an experience is always great. You didn't mention a budget, but you can get low priced restaurant tickets, or more expensive spa days or classes.

I know it seems kinda stereotypical for aunts, but how about a high-end hand cream? Gardners tend to go through a lot of it. I know a lot of people who swear by Lush products. There aren't any stores near me, so I've never tried them, but they're supposed to be a hip, decadant brand for spoiling yourself with.

My favorite gardening book is Tottering in My Garden: A Gardener's Memoir.

She's a forthright, feisty woman who has gardened over a lifetime, and her stories range from technical plant stuff (including the science of drainage beds) to witty anecdotes about fellow gardeners' exploits. Very funny and engaging, and not at all as syrupy as the cover may look. I've reread it a few times for fun.

Kind of like Peter Mayle for gardeners, but with some additional technical info.
