Not Seinfeld, it should've ended a whole season before it did. The only decent episodes of the last season depended on gimmicks to make them any good (the backwards one; the final episode). It became forced and artificial.

Blackadder Goes Forth - the final shot is perhaps the most touching thing I've ever seen on big or small screen.

Cheers - when Sam leaves the bar the last time and it lingers on the Indian chief picture from Nicholas Colasanto's (aka Coach) dressing room...and then the bar is left empty with nothing but memories.

The Wonder Years - The final voice over, with images of Kevin, Winnie and Paul happily watching the 4th of July parade with their families.

I have a friend who considers the final episode of Babylon 5 to be the absolute finest possible ending for a series.

Unfortunately, he built it up with such an enthusiastic pitch, to the point of even insisting that I couldn't watch it until he was there to watch it with me and see my reaction (I think he expected me to burst into tears, or something?), that when I finally saw it, my feeling was...

"That's IT?"

Probably if he hadn't built it up so much I would have thought it was a pretty good ending.

I'm trying to think of all the shows I've ever loved (that had an ending and lived long enough to see it) and how I felt about the last episode...

TNG: No.. 'sides, it went on in (mostly) crappy movies.

DS9: No. (won't elaborate for spoiler reasons)

Buffy: No. (won't elaborate)

Angel: mmm... not bad... but not perfect. And too soon. the show was just hitting its stride.

Red Dwarf: HA! Only if it had ended after the 2nd season. (but then we would have missed some gems later.)

Blake's 7: YES! Oh what a perfect ending given the rest of the show!

Bab5: Yeah, that ending was really good... Too bad the prior season was crap.

Veronica Mars: No. Good season ending, poor season. Should have gone on anyway.

Six Feet Under: Yes. Seems like the show went on too long, but the ending WAS perfect for the show.

Sopranos: Do I even have to say No? The show had gone on far too long anyway.

Deadwood: No, they promised us some resolution in additional TV movies that never came.

Rome: Yes, but I wish they'd done MORE! That show was great!

Evangelion: .... Uh... What the frak?

Hmmm... looking over all these "Nos" bodes ill for BSG and LOST...

Gilmore Girls. Even though the 7th season had to make up for the screw-ups of the 6th. Glad they got Amy Sherman-Palladino out of the driving seat for the last season.

Freaks and Geeks had the best series ending I've ever seen.

Still should have gone on forever, but if it had to get axed after the first season there's no better way it could have been done.

Think of how awesome the ending of B5 would have been if we hadn't had a season 5. We'd have had the end of season 4 right next to the end of season 5. It would have been a thing of beauty.

edit: According to Wikipedia that show is still on the air. That doesn't sound right...

MPH: We would have been crying for more. In fact, We were still crying for more.. And what'd we get? Crusade. (Though I still think that show might have made it given enough time and less meddling from TNT and WB. Bab5's first season was lame too.)

Simpsons is still on....

The last scene in Boy Meets World when Eric, Cory, Shawn, and Topanga go back to say good-bye to Feeny. And they all hug him (except Eric who is the closest to Feeny who gives him a handshake). Then they ask him to say that he loves them- and he just shakes his head and says "I surely will not."

Then when the walk out he just says "I love you all. Class dismissed."

That show went on probably longer than it should have- but I still love every minute of it. And that finale (even though it was mostly just clips of past stuff) was quite good. That final scene makes me almost cry every single time.

I would say the worst Seinfeld episode is the finale- the rest was all quite excellent. But the finale- meh.

I'm not sure it really would have worked that way. If the near-cancellation of B5 went through, we would only have gotten the very last episode of S5 which would replace the last episode of S4.

Without the end of the G'Kar and Londo story or the resolution of what happens to Centauri Prime, I think we're better off with what we got.

Of course, we could wonder what would happen if they had more notice of S4 ending and wrapped it up sooner, but then we may as well be wondering what would happen if there was no near cancellation at all (which I think would have been much better than both the status quo or ending at S4).

Maybe, personally I think that the meddling in Crusade would have lead to something pretty much like, well what meddling lead to in Jeremiah. Meaning an occasionally interesting story, but with some dead-ends as certain characters pushed on by the network were killed and stories were prematurely end.

Personally, I think we were better off without Crusade, JMS was definitely tired and burnt out after writing like three seasons worth of episodes almost straight.

My two cents:

BSG (I'm sure it will)

Bab 5 (of course)

Evangelion (I love twisted)

Rah Xephon (again, twisted)

Dark City

Rock & Rule

The Return of the King

I agree that Season 5 was weak (till the end) and would have been better if Claudia Christian hadn't left... she would have been the one to have the relationship with the leader of the rogue telepaths... and just imagine where that would have gone! I just finished rewatching Crusade actually... and there was some real potential there... the episodes that TNT didn't mess up were actually good. And just remember First Season of B5...wasn't the strongest either but look where it finally went!

Ooo I forgot about Boy Meets World. I'm still pissy that they haven't released more than three seasons of DVD. I want my Boy Meets World!

As for DS9, really I didn't think this was a thread for shows with the best series finale episode, I thought this was a thread for shows that ended right. After the end of the Dominion War, the resolution of the Prophets and the PahWraiths and how the crew went on with their lives, I think it was perfect. It wasn't 100% satisfying, because it leaves some things open ended, but I also think that's part of why it was good. My only complaint would be how quickly the war ended, but I guess momentum and all that, they pressed their advantage.

I'll second M*A*S*H

No, no, no, no. Buffy end of Season 7 was a way better ending. And if they'd spread season 7 out into two seasons (like, I think they needed to to really cover that much plot) it would have been perfect.

Yes, same song. By Iris DeMent, whose music I ADORE.

I love Kate Rusby. But we saw her in concert and she did "Our Town", and what she said about it made it clear that she doesn't "get it."

And that ruined her version of the song for me (and my dad.)

What EL said about Stan Rogers (I'm listening to "Between the Breaks... Live!" right now, actually. I'm on "The Mary Ellen Carter" which I contend is one of the best songs ever. Did I mention that I like Rhapsody, too? Don't have to buy all the CDs I want to listen to or keep them around the house taking up space and getting ruined by kids, but can listen to them any time for $13 a month; it's like Netflix for music. My only gripe is that they're lacking on Celtic; no Kate Rusby, no John McCusker, only 1 cd from Battlefield Band... Oh, and no Beatles.)

That's funny. I also quite liked the ending to this show. In fact, the clips chosen were very appropriate and well-sequenced to be both poignant and humorous.

Boy Meets World had a particular connection with me, since I was just about the same age as the kids in the show and, while my life was nowhere near as crazy (or sitcom-like) as the Matthews', it had episodes with many pertinent themes.

I am 28 and I love MASH and I would agree that the ending was perfect. Great show that ended beautifully.

But I would say the best ending to a show was the final episode of Ed, Happily Ever After. I'll never forget that speech Ed gives at the end, it is just amazing, and the rest of the episode encapsulates exactly what the show and characters were about. I think thats what a final episode is supposed to do and Ed did it wonderfully.

I also like Star Trek: TNG with Picard finally sitting down with his friends to play cards, Futurama with Lela telling Fry to keep playing, and Sports Night.

One of the rare TV shows that was better than the movie it was based on (and there's a thought for a thread). Rarer yet in that the movie was also better than the book(s) it was based on.

Have you read any of the MASH books? They're actually kind of funny.

Pixiest, I have agreed with you, and disagreed with you on numerous occasions over various ideas, but this is going to far.

Blake 7?

Blake 7!!!

That had to be the worst ending of any show ever.

I mean,

***Spoiler Spoiler Spoiler***

.

.

.

lets just shoot everyone dead and end it.

Melt the ship, and bring back Blake to shoot everyone.

please.

I hated that ending.

After spending many of my limited late night Saturday nights to stay up and watch the show on our local PBS station, whenever it wasn't being skipped due to Opera concerts or pledge drives, to just see each one die a useless and unremarkable death.

Yuck.

PS. M*A*S*H books? I read the original, which was about as different from the movie as the movie was from the series, and the writer hated both. I didn't know there were more than one. Were they based on the series?

Yes there were several more books following the zany antics of Pierce and McIntyre around the world. They are not related to the TV series and, to my knowledge, do not involve being in Korea at all.

I read the original book and have skimmed the one in Maine, but never paid much more attention that that.

Fraggle Rock had a finale episode?!?!?

We never had cable so I only saw about 20 episodes that somebody taped for us. I didn't realize that they actually drew it all to a close. I assumed it just stopped airing like most kid's shows.

Does anybody know where I can find GOOD synopsis of the finale? I loved the show and would like to know what happened to all the characters.

The last two episodes of Season 7 have to be some of my favorite. I mean sure, the plot got crunched more than it should have been and so it felt a little rushed and like some things could have used some more interpretation, but the ending was really just about perfect. I like happy endings. The rather depressing, bittersweet ending of Season 5 -- it was too depressing for me to think it was a good ending.

Good and bittersweet as it was, I like the end season 7 much better. With Buffy (and Faith) now freed of the burden of being the chosen ones and Sunnydale destroyed. That last shot of looking over the big crater that was Sunnydale. "You're not the one and only chosen now, B, how does it feel?" "Yeah, what are we gonna do now Buffy?" And then she gives this little almost a smile. Perfect.

And I think if they'd split season 7 into two, it would have been absolutely, completely, utterly perfect.

And for Season 6, I didn't hate season 6, it just got way too dark and depressing for me. But there's a lot of good stuff in there, particularly the last four episodes, which have to be among my favorite Buffy episodes of all time.

I agree that the show with the best ending was Newhart.

I hated, HATED the ending of Gilmore Girls. I was very disappointed. It just went on the emphasize who selfish Lorali is and that she had finally passed it on the Rory. Blah. I was hooked on GG and was very disappointed by the ending.

You're near my age right? I don't think I've ever heard anyone around my own age say they liked MASH at all, let alone could comment on how well it ended.
[Razz] Every comment I could have made was already stated, so that's all I've got left.

(My parents loved M*A*S*H, so we watched it in syndication, which is how I developed my love for it. And yes, we are nearly the same age - I'm 24 as of less than a month ago.)

Hmm
I bet I'm the only MASH hater here.

Also Haibane Renmei had a great ending.
And also Cowboy Bebop, though it was depressing
Vision of Escaflowne was good. I can't think of any normal tee vee endings I've liked.
Roseane was only so-so. X-files to my limited knowledge might have been vile. There's not a whole lot of endings I remember.

Oh, and I want to second the nomination of Black Adder, perhaps the best series ending in television history.

Oh, I meant the British version. It lasted two seasons, and wrapped up nicely with a Christmas special. The American version is still going strong.

** BLAKE'S 7 SPOILERS **

But that's what was so beautiful about it! Everyone dies except Vila (you saw him go down... did you actually see him get shot?) And Avon who raises his gun just as the credits start rolling. You hear gun fire... It gets fainter and fainter... Someone as crafty as Avon probably got away.. but you never know.. unless you read the book.

The show is dark. The good guys really aren't all that good. And most of all, you NEED a show where evil wins in the end every now and then. It makes the shows where good triumphs even better, because you need the doubt to cause suspense.

Man, I'm not sure. But, I'll try my best: Over the last few episodes, peace between the Fraggles, the Doozers, and the Gorgs has been established...then Doc discovers what Sprocket's known for the past few years: The hole in his worshop is a portal to a strange alternate universe. He and Gobo meet and talk, but the talk doesn't go all that well...Doc is moving, and he ends up frightening and alienating Gobo. It looks like things may be headed towards an unhappy ending...but then the Trash-Heap has a special message for Gobo to give Doc. It all leads to a super-ultra-mega-happy ending. [Big Grin]

I second Trigun, Evangelion, and the West Wing.

I'd also like to add Eli Stone...

Oh wait, it's coming back, nevermind. [Party]

Others I liked were Star Trek: TNG, and while I didn't love many of the final episodes, the last episode of Rurouni Kenshin was a perfect ending.

It ends with Vash incapacitating Knives, and carrying him away, as I saw it, to heal him and teach him the error of his ways. By the end of the episode, Vash displays a confidence in himself (as opposed to merely a confidence in Rem's teachings) that he never does until that point. To borrow the metaphor from an earlier episode, Vash finds a way to both feed the spider AND save the fly.

I loved The Wire. Possibly the most perfect show ever made. The only character's ending I had a problem with was Micheal's. I always thought he had more potential as a human being than what he became.

My father told me that The Wire was magnificent. What's good about it? I mean, it's just another cop show, no?

Lisa, it's bigger than a cop show and its realism, depth, characters and novelisic approach to story telling are all quite stunning. The show isn't the least bit episodic--each season tells one story, and the seasons build on each other. Waiting for a new seasons was truly like waiting for a new installment of Harry Potter. Some people were drawn to the intellectual aspects of the show, the statements it was trying to make, but for me, it was the characters and story that kept me obsessed about it.

Its staff of writers came to include three major crime novelists--George Pelecanos, Richard Price and Denis Lehane. And David Simon and Ed Burns, the creators and main writers of the show, truly knew their subject--the former having been a journalist for The Baltimore Sun covering crime and the latter a policeman in Baltimore for decades. Both drew heavily on their experiences for the show.

But as I said, it's the story and characters, as well as the novelistic structure that made the developments which occur way more satisfying than in your typical cop show, that drew me in. Anyone who hasn't seen this show is truly missing out and is in for a treat.

Here's a British critic named Charlie Brooker reviewing the show on youtube. (some language)

Thanks. The Denis Lehane thing explains a lot, too. My Dad reads his books. That might be part of it.

Maybe I'll try it.
