TV Drug Placement

Eww. Though it would be funny to hear Maura Tierney outlining the fine print side effects, worked artfully into the dialogue.

I was thinking marijuana references would be construed as advertisements.

This is kinda dumb in my opinion. Some things are common sense enough that they shouldn't have to be spelled out. They don't include gun warnings in action flicks. Or for cars, or sex, or even [illegal] drugs in some movies/shows. Stupidity should have consequences dammit! Let natural selection do it's thing! I think we need to take safety labels off of simple appliances and hand tools. If you can't figure out how not to burn yourself while making coffee, then you deserve to be burnt.

Medication certainly isn't one of these things, some are perfectly safe, and some have significant side effects, a TV show format probably couldn't effectively inform the viewer each time. If doctors on a long running medical drama stated that a certain new drug was the only thing they could think of to solve a problem, many people with their sense of trust in television that it wouldn't explicitly lie to them, might go out and purchase that drug. It's why cartoon characters can't smoke or do drugs.

Movies do not have the same rules as TV shows, as their audiences are not the same.

Educating the population in order to protect them IS letting natural selection do it's thing.

Again it's not just adults who can read warning labels, I'm sure there are appliances I stayed away from as a child because even if I did not understand all the text on the warning label, the picture and the words, "caution/danger" warded me away.

If media execs and pharmaceutical companies can figure out a way to plug new drugs while still reasonably warning the viewer about possible side effects then more power to them. I don't know how they could do it, but it's the only way I'd be comfortable with them doing it.

edited for clarity in the first paragraph.
