He's been around that long? Did he fight in WWII?

There's perhaps some unexpected depth to this movie.

It may explain why a super-strong, nigh invulnerable guy seems so weary and burnt out. After that many decades, even saving the world would seem sort of "meh".

Is Hancock made up for this movie? Or does he have a comic book or other fictional legacy that predates the movie?

Hancock is the latest iteration of "Tonight, He Comes", a spec screenplay that was written back in the 90s. It has no other basis, beyond that of the super-hero genre in general.

It should also be noted that the trailers and ad spots have been focusing almost exclusively on the more humorous aspects of the story...unless it's been left on the editing room floor, there's some grittier stuff there.

Yeah, I gotta say, the trailers and ads have left me confused about how seriously this movie is meant to be taken. It's an interesting concept, but if it's just a silly comedy it loses it's appeal for me.

Although, it does look like there are some funny parts. I liked the bit in one of the trailers when he's trying to maintain a more public friendly image while he rescues a woman who's in the line of fire and he says something like, "I'm going to take you out of danger. Ma'am, do I have your permission to touch your body?" And she's like, "Yes!!"

This continues to become more and more interesting for me.
