I went to the Rodin museum in Philadelphia this weekend, and it reinforced how much I love his work. Seeing the Rodins in the Louvre when I was 18 changed my thinking on modern art. I absolutely love it, and there are three different Rodin sculptures that I'd be thrilled to have a copy of.
I hope that isn't tacky. It's like having a poster of a favorite painting, right? I know it's not the same as the original, but it could/should evoke the original.
Unfortunately, posters are easy to find but copies of sculptures are not. Anyone have any idea?
The ones I'd like a copy of are Cathedral, Despair, or ... dang it, the third spot keeps changing. If I find a source for The Kiss, though, I have a new favorite wedding present to give.

I know I've come across sites selling them before. If you haven't tracked down a source by the time I'm home tonight I'll check and see if I've got any of them bookmarked.

I saw Despair or a copy of it at the museum in Philadelphia. It's shocking how evocative it is. Shocking in an emotional way, not a "shocked and appalled" way.
I'm one of the people who, when I'm depressed, actually feel better when I can art that expresses how I'm feeling. There's solace in knowing I wasn't the only one to feel that way.
Another one that I loved from this weekend was "Crying Girl." It was just a head, and it was a teenage girl who was flat out sobbing. It was beautiful - that's not an emotion or an event I'd ever seen depicted in marble before. Rodin is wonderful.

One of the great ironies of the Rodin Museum in Philly is that it is notorious for attracting new brides to take their picture in front of the gates.
Why ironic? The gates are Rodin's "The Gates of Hell".

I was just thinking yesterday that the grounds of the museum would be a fantastic place to hold a wedding reception. In fact, if I lived near Philadelphia and was looking for a venue, I'd definitely try. The grounds are absolutely beautiful.

You seem to be covered, but I was going to say I remember The Museum Company used to have reproductions of a lot of Rodin's pieces. I don't know if they still exist, though, I think all the ones around here have closed.

The Museum company is still in business, at least on line.
However, I searched their site and didn't see a copy of Despair. They did have the other two, and one or two more.
I've been thinking for a few years now about a little Canova or Bernini for my apartment. I haven't done it yet, though, mainly because the ones I've seen cost much more than I would be comfortable spending on fake art. The $20-$60 Van Gogh and Caravaggio prints on my walls are about as far as I can go.

Have you seen much of his work in person? I have found that pictures simply don't do justice to any great work of art and are simply awful at communicating sculpture. You just have to see the originals to understand what makes a great sculpture a great sculpture.
