Formerly scheduled for a fall 2008 release, the upcoming high quality hardcover reprinting of every Pogo strip in chronological order has been moved to spring of 2009.

Pogo is a strip I didn't discover until coming across the old book collections back in the 1980s. It's Walt Kelly's comedic masterpiece. There's never been another comic strip that's quite captured his particular brand of pointed whimsy, quirky word play, and gorgeous art.

Pogo was an important inspiration for later comics like Bloom County, Calvin & Hobbes, and graphic novels like Jeff Smith's Bone.

I am so totally ready to begin collecting the entire series in hardcover.

PLEASE let this be the last delay. [Grumble]

To see what I'm talking about, the official strip website has posted this sampling from one of the older Pogo books.

I still crack up every time I read about "Uncle Merv" getting measured. [Big Grin]

I think that I have the full run of Pogo collected in a number of old, falling-apart-from-years-of-rereading collections, but it'd be nice to have them all together in a nice hardcover collection printed on high quality paper. I still haven't gotten the complete Calvin and Hobbes collection, though, so it's actually fairly unlikely that I'll get around to getting this one any time soon.

Oooh, just read that Jim Henson considered Pogo to be an important influence for the brand of humor seen in The Muppet Show. [Cool]

Well, this'll be more like the Peanuts collections...a hardcover chronological reprinting released twice a year. Pogo had a run of almost 30 years, so a C&H style edition might be a bit...massive. [Big Grin]

They could do like Doonesbury or The New Yorker and release a large collection with the remainder on attached CDs... I would certainly consider buying such a thing!

From chapter 2 in the link, why does a bat look like a vagrant man? I'm sure there's a joke I'm missing there.

It's not really a joke per se. The bat is one of a group of brothers who were generally portrayed as being a bit seedier than the already homespun and (proudly) low class denizens of the swamp.

Do they? Real possums and alligators don't have noses like Pogo and Albert.

That's just how Kelly drew bats. Call it artistic license. [Smile]
