According to this story, 6 are dead and 8 missing. [Frown]

That's sad, but anyplace else in the world it would probably have been orders of magnitude worse. I'm always astonished by the degree to which the Japanese have earthquake-proofed their buildings and infrastructure.

They prefer survival apparently. [Smile]

This is sad, but I agree it could have been much worse.

Richter 7.2, and six dead? Ye gods, that's what I call engineering.

These things always make me skittish as some of my family lives in Tokyo.

Seriously no kidding.

I'm wondering where CNN got that "U.S. Geological Survey reports 7.2 magnitude quake...".
Cuz the USGS Earthquake List has pegged the strongest quake at 6.8 on the RichterMagnitudeScale, which is ~4times weaker than CNN is reporting, and (at least) ~45times weaker than the Sichuan earthquake.

It also helps that the quake was centered in a relatively unpopulated region of Honshu.

A friend of mine in Fukuoka (admittedly on the other end of Japan) hadn't even heard about it until I emailed him to check that everything was OK.
