Yeah, I know, we've had a lot of these lately. And now we have one of mine.

Here's what I think I recall from the story:

It's somewhat post-apocalyptic, and the guy contacts an old girlfriend or friend. She's hooked up with this ultra-fundie religious group which is trying to breed a red heifer without blemish, but they're not careful, and they end up spreading and catching the big bad apocalyptic plague from the cows. The guy goes out there to fetch the girl, and there's some sort of stand off with the people who run the place.

Sound's interesting, I'll have to check that out once someone names it.

No idea, but you could try this GoodReads group.

Didn't find it, but a search on amazon for "red heifer" in fiction yielded some really interesting results.

Your description sort of makes me think of Spin by Robert (Charles?) Wilson, but that's a novel and not a story. I read it when I had the hell flu, so I may be remembering not so well.

Maybe I should reread it without flu. I enjoyed it at the time, but in a haze.

Spin was a great read. Its sequel Axis though, not nearly as good.

I think that's it, as I know that I read Spin during the time that I read the red heifer story. Also, in the Venn diagram of my idiolect, "novel" is a subset of "story". [Smile]

Thanks!

(And yeah, that was a fabulous book.)

Actually mostly end-of-the-world type stuff (on Amazon), some of it sci-fi, and a mystery or two in interesting settings.
