Lisa alluded to it in a different thread, but in case you didn't click on it...

Last Friday I got the chance to interview Joss Whedon about his upcoming Web-only musical miniseries "Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog." He was... Joss.

quote:
Basically it’s your typical Internet musical about a super villain who’s trying to make his bones in the super villain community and get some respect, and maybe even work up the nerve to talk to the girl at the Laundromat.

So, like every other Internet serial musical.

Yeah, you know, I mean it’s a tired genre but I thought I could wring a few bucks out of it before it dies.

You can read the transcript here. My article and the interview MP3 will be online tomorrow at www.news-journalonline.com/entertainment.htm .

And don't miss "Dr Horrible's Sing-Along Blog", debuting midnight tonight!

It's available at iTunes already. And is shooting up their top ten TV show chart.

Also- great interview, Chris.

Yay for it being back! I didn't like having to send my friends and future Whedon-stalkers to a dead page.

You know, I really adore Nathan Fillion. I think he's brilliant. But I think NPH stole the show for me. His blogging to the camera was hysterical. In a few minutes he just completely established this character from his rhythm of speech to his facial quirks and mannerisms. And his singing voice is so endearing! I can't stop playing the "Freeze Ray" song.

I've been in love with NPH ever since I saw the short-lived but hilarious season of Stark Raving Mad with Tony Shaloub. I then heard him sing Toby for the San Francisco concert version of Sweeney Todd with Patty Lupone and loved him even more. Fantastic.

Recently, I've been hanging onto every single breath of How I Met Your Mother just because of him. The fact that he's now in with the Joss crowd and singing with Nathan Fillion?!! Wow. It's almost more awesome than I can stand.

Is it just me or is the music surprisingly good?!? I mean, when I first heard about this project I had Buffy-musical-flashbacks and the picture, while entertaining, wasn't particularly pretty. But I'm really love the songs. I still have mixed feelings about Penny/Felicia's voice. I think it works well for the character but it kinda grates my nerves.

I'll certainly be buying the videos as each comes out, but has anyone heard talk about them releasing a physical dvd?! I look forward to showing it off to friends.

It was amazing. But there were bits that seemed like they were copied out of OMWF. Dr. Horrible's song when Cap ticked him off was very reminiscent of Spike in OMWF getting angry at Buffy, for one thing. And he seems to have something about fires in garbage cans. I kept expecting Horrible to say that he touches the fire and it freezes him.

Not to say I'm not enjoying the heck out of it, though. And I can't wait for Hammer to get his comeuppance.

I really didn't get that at all from "A Brand New Day". The only think it had in common with "Rest in Peace" is that it was an angry rock ballad. Beyond that it felt very different to me.

I dunno if Hammer will... you know Joss, he's real good at playing with our heart strings. And this seems like a tragic fall sorta thing the ways it's going.

Posted by Puffy Treat (Member # 7210) on :

Since Rest in Peace was a deliberate pastiche of emotionally rock ballads, it sounds similar to a multitude of songs.

Posted by Chris Bridges (Member # 1138) on :

Since this is Joss, he has only one 14-minute act left to bring true love to Dr. Horrible and then have someone tragically die.

Evilest possible ending (but not, mind you, a prediction): In the first fight between Horrible and Hammer, Hammer accidentally destroys Penny's building and exposes himself as a jerk. In the rematch, she dies after saving Horrible's life; Hammer slinks away. Bad Horse, impressed by Horrible's murder of the woman Hammer "loves," admits him to the Evil League of Evil.

The songs where all three of them are singing at once are like musical jigsaw puzzles. I'm trying to write the lyrics down, and the notation is getting very complicated. It's interesting to pull out the lines that I don't normally notice because they're buried under the other voices.

I didn't like the last episode as much as the first two. For one it was much darker, and I wasn't a big fan of the ending. Of course there was the obvious reason, but also because I thought the very end was very abrupt. I thought it needed another minute or two.

I guess we will just have to wait until they film a sequel.

I am not supposed to be upset over a musical internet show. The first two parts are so much fun and then bam!

So are all future episodes going to be little three-part movies?! I expected the Penny/Hammer/Horrible triangle to last longer than this. I was expecting such a sudden, traumatic climax.

Oh, I thought they were going to be doing several weeks worth of episodes but the first week would be the only one available for free in order to get people interested and willing to pay for future installments.

So did they really mean that it would be viewable for free only during the first week and then it would be taken down and only available on itunes?

Not completely. Penny died with Doctor Horrible believing she was in love with Captain Hammer, unaware the infatuation had faded and that she'd missed Billy.

I just finished re-watching Act III and I think Penny's comment about Captain Hammer saving them was actually done to spite Dr. Horrible.

She had already got up and left when Dr. Hammer started talking about sex. I don't think she was a fan of Hammer. She witnessed the entire entrance by Dr. Horrible. When Horrible sings "here there is no mercy," it is obvious she is watching the events. She evens whispers something..not sure what.

I think she knows who Dr. Horrible is and is so disappointed that she gets in a jab at him before her death. That is my new read on the matter.

He's kind of turning into a one-trick pony, though, don't you think? There must be other ways to interfere with a solid relationship than killing characters, I mean. Tara, dead. Renee (in the comic) dead. Penny, dead.

What "solid relationship" did they have? Doctor Horrible was obsessively infatuated with her but never admitted it. Penny was gradually realizing she really missed Billy, but never had a chance to explore those feelings. That's not a relationship, those are unrequited emotions.

And that's a rule of the genre...super-villains never get their true love. Especially not ones with a wistful streak. [Smile]

Personally, I think she was delirious.

Posted by The Pixiest (Member # 1863) on :

I agree with Puffy. Penny was delirious. I just rewatched it with "getting in a jab" on her mind and that didn't fit her expression. Her expression was definately more of a lost expression than an angry one.

Besides, even though Billie was singing "no mercy, no mercy," he couldn't go through with it. It wsa Captain Hammer who DID go through with it, thus killing her.

Posted by scifibum (Member # 7625) on :

I could be reading too much into it, but I think the final cut to Billy sitting in his basement, singing to himself in a soft voice staring into space, suggests that the preceding 5 minutes are all a fantasy he's playing out in his head. They make more sense as a fantasy than as actual events, even in the context of the previous 2.5 acts.

Am I crazy? If there's more to come in this series, I think Penny's alive.

Posted by Leonide (Member # 4157) on :

Been reading some of the forum on the Official Fan Site for the webishow...i like the idea that the villain has two personalities that are warring: Dr. Horrible, and Billy. In the end, we see Horrible win out, attaining his goals, but the final shot is of Billy blogging. Before this, we saw only Dr. Horrible blogging...so before, Horrible was the inner voice that needed to be heard through Billy, and now Billy is the inner voice that is trying to speak through Horrible. One has trumped the other, so to speak, and the weaker voice is always trying to have a say. When Billy lost Penny, he let Horrible take over.

Also, I'm pretty sure there aren't supposed to be more episodes of this story...the way Whedon and his writers have made it sound, this particular story was a once-and-done -- the actors worked for free and and all have other projects they devote most of their time to. What's hopefully going to continue is the format...small, low-budget webishows.

Here is a link to the lyrics of the songs.
Lyrics to Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog

I was writing them down myself, but then I figured I should check to see if anyone else had already done it. Turns out-they had.

Posted by Teshi (Member # 5024) on :

Leonide, I didn't realise the Billy/Dr. Horrible switch and I think you're absolutely right (was that your idea or one you picked up, it's tough to tell. Either way, I think it's the correct one.)

For everyone else: It's Joss Whedon. He can't seem to end when everyone's happy.

That said, back to Leonide's comment, it's kinda nice to know that Billy is still in there somewhere. Whedon often tends to twist the dark dark dark ending a little, and turn it up at the end. Buffy, Xander and Willow get out alive. Serenity is still flying. Billy, although suppressed, is still there:

Dr. Horrible says says, "I won't feel..." but it's Billy who gets the final word and says, with no conviction at all, and without any musical conclusion to the song, "...a thing."

That's the Whedon twist, turning things up at the end, just a little. It's actually even more tragic- but less stark- that way.

I LOVED how Captain Hammer finished the phrase he was in after becoming unfrozen. I do that all the time and it made me howl with laughter.

Teshi: not mine, just extrapolated from ideas i read on the forum. kind of my own with the stronger personality covering the weaker one. but that's it [Smile]

you resume the song you were singing at exactly the same place you left off before you were rendered immobile by a freeze ray?

Posted by TomDavidson (Member # 124) on :

I would be genuinely surprised if there were more episodes as part of any sort of initial plan. It's pretty clearly laid out as a classical tragedy -- a man achieves his lifelong goal at the cost of his conscience -- and that framework is jeopardized by additional episodes.

Posted by Teshi (Member # 5024) on :

Leonide: Well, obviously sans Freeze Ray. I go outside where my singing would be a little bizarre for the neighbours, and resume the song- mid-phrase- when I come back in.

One thing that makes me think that this series isn't over is that in the credits, all of the other villains in Bad Horses room were named. I wouldn't be surprised if he went on to write their stories as well.

He's achieved it -- or at least that part of it he remembers. He's a member of the Evil League of Evil, has henchmen, and has enough cash flow to afford working gadgets and an upgraded costume. All that's left is for him to get around to engineering the social change that drove him to supervillainy in the first place (and of course that'll never happen, because his conscience is mostly dead already.)

One thing I really liked in the final song was how the background voices singing, "Everything you wanted" were quieter each time. By the third time, as Dr. Horrible was joining the ELE, it was nearly inaudible. As he assumed his new role, his old motivations faded into the background.

I love picking things apart after they're already out there. And yet, there's something to be said for initial, unconsidered impressions. At first, I liked getting socked in the face with Penny's death (despite expecting it) and the initial feeling of anger and sadness over Horrible's choices. The visceral reaction -- always awesome. And then afterwards, dissecting symbols and lyrics and movements and, it seems at times, eye blinks and head tilts -- well, that's awesome too.

Does that mean every aspect of everything is cool? I don't think I can wrap my noggin around that ;0p

...And of course, in the last shot, he's wearing dead black...

To clarify, I'm not sure Dr. Horrible is successful in killing his conscience.

Several possibilities occurred to me... One, that Dr. Horrible is deeply haunted by his role in Penny's death. Secondly, that when he says he won't feel anything, we're to take that to include any feelings of accomplishment or happiness at his "success". And thirdly, the possibility that the montage between the final caper and Dr. Horrible's last line is in his mind only, and his last reaction shows the actual emotional aftermath of the results.

In any case, the last shot seems to suggest Dr. Horrible returning to his blog, which doesn't suggest he's doing too well.

I think both those things are true.

If you have an ftp site, I can put it up there for you. Each piece (as an flv) is a little under 14 Mb.

I do, but it's down right now. Probably a thunderstorm took out the power or something of that nature. I may send you an e-mail when I can get it back up... if you don't mind. Otherwise I can always just bit torrent it (I think it's small enough that I could manage to bittorrent it from the lab and no one would notice or care). Not having internet from home is rather frustrating sometimes...

Until the official soundtrack is released, I've been listening to a compilation I found on bittorrent. I think I have almost all the words from "Laundry Day/Freeze Ray" memorized. It'll be nice when the soundtrack comes out just so I'll know what to call each song. I think "On the Rise" is my favorite so far. Ooh, or maybe the "Finale." Grr...I can't decide!

I wonder how many dvds I'd have to buy in order to convince Joss and his friends to do another three acts. I miss the good ole days when we could blame the end of Whedon-related genius on a blind, humorless corporate television network.

I downloaded a compilation as well, unfortunately it's missing one song (the one Penny sings to Billy in the laundromat before Captain Hammer shows up). It has all the other songs though, which is nice.

Why can't you just let a silly spoof be. Joss did say "sillier than I’m allowed to do in the normal course of Hollywood," and “This is just us, this is what we want to do with our time. Everybody is having the time of their lives.” So why are people engaged in discussion over the symbolism. Jeeshh.

I didn't really think much of the symbolism (as in it didn't enter my mind, so I literally didn't think of it). But I still think it's interesting to discuss the thoughts behind it, the moral and message of the story. For instance, I couldn't care less about the colors of his costume. But the effectiveness of Dr. Horrible being an unabashed villain and not coming out as the hero or being regulated to the periphery in any way, while at the same time being a sympathetic, likable, and identifiable character, was brilliant. I loved the tension (at least in myself) between not wanting to root for the villain but not being able to help it because I agree with and like the villain so much.

How do you feel about literary analysis?

And while I love that quote (it's actually my sig elsewhere), I don't agree with it. I don't find enjoying a piece of entertainment (and actually, I didn't enjoy this one that much) and analyzing it in any way incompatible. If you do, then Scott's comment applies. And this is hardly the first entertainment-related thread on Hatrack to analyze small details of a piece!

I thought so too, at first, but after watching (well, listening mostly) it more times than I care to admit, I actually think it's really quite good. I don't want to try to rank them, but Act III is definitely not my least favorite anymore.

If there is symbolism, it will be analyzed. If there is not, it will not be. Since there clearly is, I don't see the problem.

Also, what separates Joss Whedon's pieces of fluff where everyone's having the time of their lives from Somebody Else's piece of fluff where everyone's having the time of their lives is a little bit of intelligence.

My favorite so far:

Washington, D.C.: I thought Joss Whedon was calling in favors to make Dr. Horrible. How did you get mixed up in that project?

Neil Patrick Harris: I've been clamoring to work with him since Firefly.

He's supertastic.

When he mentioned super villain and musical, I drooled.

But rather than lash out, I moved back to New Mexico for a spell and spent time rock climbing with friends...

Though, don't underestimate knocking over a liquor store. Their shocked expressions are priceless.

Does anyone else see that Serenity-Better Days add down at the bottom of the page? Is it just me or does that picture of Mal really, really not look like Nathan Fillion. He looks really strongly like someone else but I can't put my finger on it. It's sorta bothering me.

There will be a sequel.

The soundtrack will be available for download in a few weeks.

Nathan Fillion wants to do more Firefly episodes because Joss has already killed off all the people he doesn't want to work with again (kidding, I think [Smile] )

And the DVD will include the 10 best video applications for entry into the Evil League of Evil. There's a contest coming...

I just watched all three episodes for the first time, although I did know about the Jossing of the girl from several sources.

That was excellent, and the final episode was definitely the best of three. I never thought that it was just a fun romp, so I felt like it was only in the final episode that we got to the story.

Unpopular opinion: I'm getting tired of Nathan Fillon. He was fine in this, I guess, but I'm tired of seeing him in absolutely everything Joss does, whether his character fits or not. Perhaps I'm still bitter about the random shoehorning in of the world's lamest villian who drones on too much into the final season of Buffy, but it's time for Nathan Fillon to seperate himself from Joss's language and do several parts that are not underlaid by a snigger.

Neil Patrick Harris was absolutely wonderful. Penny had a sweet voice and was fine as Willow.

He did, actually. The movie "Waitress," the show "Drive," and guest spots on "Lost" and "Desperate Housewives." He never showed up on "Buffy," although Zoe did. And he's not in Joss' upcoming new show "Dollhouse," or at least not yet.

I thought he made a great Captain Hammer. Maybe he was the only one of Joss' buddies with the build for it? (Although Adam Baldwin coulda done it, and would I have loved to see that...)

Fillon did show up on Buffy - he played Caleb. Perhaps you have blocked it out. I wish I could.

I really liked him in Waitress. I didn't see the other television shows. I get that he and Joss are friends and he does the language well, but he needs to stop doing stuff written by Joss. I'd get tired of any actor if they always spoke with the same voice.

On a similar note, I want David Tennant's project after Doctor Who to NOT be written by Russell T Davies, despite the groundshaking brilliance of his Doctor and his Casanova.

If the themes don't bother you, katharina, i'd recommend renting a movie called "Outing Riley." some decent laughs, pretty good supporting cast and storytelling, and Fillion plays a non-Joss character who has probably the best scene (monologue) in the movie.

I'm always on the lookout for Fillion in films!

edit: caveat, though, the theme of homosexuality is very in-your-face in this one, as the title might suggest. it might be too much for you, i'm not sure.
double edit: can homosexuality be a theme?

Posted by katharina (Member # 827) on :

Homosexuality is very much part of the human experience, and it being a topic isn't offputting. A lot does depend on it how it is done, of course. Any time someone sets out to tell a morality tale (whether the moral in question is virtue or tolerance) instead of a human story, it can turn out badly. If it's a human story that happens to deal with that subject matter as part of the human story to be told (the way I think Rent did it) then it's great.

That objection is more of an artistic one rather than anything else, though. [Razz]

Although I do generally turn things off if the language is really foul. And I couldn't make it through Taxi Driver, despite its obvious quality, because I didn't enjoy the bleak nihilism.

In other words, there's no telling. [Razz] Can I ask you why you like it?

basically the things i mentioned: good supporting cast, interesting take the director (and star and writer) had in regards to how he told the story. I really only recommended it because you were talking about non-Joss Fillion stuff, and Nathan is far-and-away the best thing about the movie, and has multiple great scenes and one really-awesome-great scene in it.

i had streamed it off of netflix on a whim because i thought the premise sounded amusing: a gay 30-something man in an irish-catholic family sets out to tell his macho-manly-men brothers about his homosexuality, with hilarious results! (well, i added that last part)

it had some rough moments, and it was obviously indie, but i liked the idea of the sibling bond and a not-so-religious take on how every-day people deal with finding out about a gay family member (although of course religion is present, in fact, the oldest brother is a priest.) the more i think about it, though, there were a couple scenes early on that bugged me -- some gratuitous nudity (of course, they sort of made fun of it themselves, but nevertheless it was obviously just there for kicks) and at least from your end, i'm sure there is way too much swearing.

if you have netflix, i suggest just streaming it on there, and seeing if it bothers you [Smile]

edit: also, the title bugged me. It's called "Outing Riley" but Riley is the family last name -- the main character is Bobby. Or if they mean "Outing the Rileys" because the movie has a theme of revealing secrets, then it should say that and not the singular. because that's not right! that's a huge boo-boo for a title!

I watched/listened to Dr. Horrible again on the metro this morning, and it reaffirmed my initial impressions. The music is wonderful - Joss's music sounds like melodious Sondheim, and the lyrics are so clever. The bit about "shiny, new..Australia" makes me laugh every time. Captain Hammer's incredibly long song in Act 3 I fastforwarded over due to irritation, but I've listened to every song Dr. Horrible sings at least three times. It's lovely.

I love that part too. And I agree on the Sondheim note, especially during "Slipping" (Dr. Horrible's triumphant song after he freezes Captain Hammer.) From interviews, it seems we have Joss's older brother Jeb to thank for the more modern sounding tracks.

One of my other favorite parts is "This world is going to burn, burn...its two Rs - Horr-...Burn!"

I think its amazing what an improvement it is over Buffy's "Once More with Feeling" soundtrack.
