There is a class action suit against Transunion that is might be going to settlement in September. They are accused of violating rules concerning sale of consumer information to marketers.

Anyone "who had an open credit account or an open line of credit from a credit grantor located in the United States at any time during the period January 1, 1987 to May 28, 2008" is eligible for the settlement, which includes credit monitoring for either 6 months or 9 months. If you choose 9 months, you waive any rights to receive a possible cash settlement or file an individual suit against Transunion.

I have nothing to do with this - I just happened to read about it in Kiplinger's at the dentist today. The deadline is coming up so I thought I'd mention it for those, like me, who hadn't heard of this.

Here's the Kiplinger's article I mentioned.

To my mind, the most important part is this:

TransUnion won't collect credit-card numbers upfront and won't continue providing the service for a fee after the initial period ends, unless you request it.

Following one of the other links on that page I just found a checking account for my parents that has been collecting interest since 1973!

My parents are fling a claim to it, so thanks for pointing this stuff out.

I filed for free reporting myself, and will have my wife do the same tomorrow.

Thanks for the heads up. Signed up and told my family. This is good information to have.

Personally I think the whole system is messed up - they maintain and sell personal information on me, and (except for this settlement period, and one free annual report) I have to pay to see what it is? Using my government-issued personal identification number, no less. Makes me mad.

Bump. There has been some progress. I just received information on how to set up the credit monitoring benefit. If you signed up for it you should get the information within the next month or so.

However, the potential cash settlement won't be finalized until September 2010 at the earliest.

The Court granted final approval of the settlement. You may click here to view the Court’s Order. The deadline to register for benefits was September 24, 2008 and has since passed. No further registrations for benefits are being accepted. E-mails explaining how to begin receiving credit monitoring benefits will be distributed to eligible Class Members December 2009 through February 2010. Please note that if you registered for the potential cash benefit, a final determination and potential distribution will not occur until all claims against the fund are resolved, which will not happen before September 2010, and could be as late as October 2011.
