So if I have a Vista machine and my friend has an XP machine can I remotely connect to his machine and (with his consent) fiddle with stuff?

Google is your friend. EDIT: One piece of information that you might find relevant in case the computer you're trying to connect to is running XP Home.

From everything I have tried you can't. You can however go to gotomypc.com get a 30 day trial of remote desktop software that works on any platform.

You may want to also check into Remote Assistance, which works pretty well. Just Google the term.

As long as you're both using XP Pro or higher, you just need to make sure the ports are forwarded on the receiving computer and the receiving computer is set up to accept remote desktop connections. Right click my computer, go to properties, click the remote tab, put a check in "Allow users to connect remotely to this computer". Then set up the router/firewall to forward port 3889 to his computer's IP address.
Go to IP Chicken and write down the receiving computer's IP address, and use that to connect with the RDP client.
I might add that setting this up opens a gaping, giant, evil, massive, ugly security hole that will be exploited if it isn't closed up when you're done doing what you need to, so make sure the receiving computer has a *very* strong Administrator password and all user accounts on the computer have strong passwords as well. Note: the word password is *not* a strong password.
