Yes, but he had a illness that actually made is lungs weak which caused him to catch the pneumonia.

I was shocked and saddened to learn this - particularly since a summer cough ran through our family at a rate of at least 3 weeks per person, and my husband had it for about 5 weeks. He was coughing blood for a while and went on antibiotics and an inhaler. My mother and in-laws both got it too.

According to this, the underlying disease was sarcoidosis.

So there were really two Fox shows based on his life: The Bernie Mac Show, and the first half of every episode of House.
