Just curious...why in the world is that tiny url site so popular here? There is no reason for it. The board has a URL function that prevents the need for such a site. Just click the URL button, paste the website, and then enter some text. That way people can know what site they are going to before clicking a link (by hovering their mouse over the text).

like this

In the days of spyware, and malicious sites...it is a bad idea to ever go into a site blindly...which tiny url requires.

Sorry for the rant, but it is a huge pet peeve of mine.

For some symbols in web addresses, the board does not recognize the address and so the function you reference does not work.

---
Edited to add: Also, I suspect, the surprise factor in some contexts. Mind you, one never has to click on a link here. It's okay to skip them, even if it means missing out on a joke.

Also, I think TinyUrl does have some sort of preview feature now. Not sure about that, but I recall something along those lines.

No it doesn't. The board's URL function breaks for URLs with certain characters in them.

...and then the entire thread requires constant scrolling back and forth, often making people less likely to read the entire page the URL is on.

Also, as CT said, sometimes you might want to surprise people, and the actual link includes a hint as to what the picture or link might be.

Did anyone notice that TinyURL now allows custom tagging, like SnipURL (which OSC recommended for that reason a month or so back?)

What character breaks the URL function?

Posted by ClaudiaTherese (Member # 923) on :

Maybe the "&"? I can't remember. There might be more than one, too.

(Three. [Wink] )

Several of them do, but I don't care enough to find out which ones.

I can always just used TinyURL and not worry about it. [Wink]

Just tested all the characters on my keyboard, and they all worked except for parentheses, the right bracket "]" (easily understandable) and quotation marks and apostrophes:
'
"
`

Parentheses actually generated an error message and forced me to remove before the "Preview Post" function would work, but the others just failed to work.

These characters should all be encoded when in URLs, so I think that's why the UBB function doesn't properly account for them. Very fixable bug, I would think.

It isn't specific characters, it is specific combinations of characters (or possibly characters at a certain length). I don't know one offhand, but there have been several real URLs that have broken the function for me. At one point I experimented a bit and found the minimal change in one URL to unbreak things, but I didn't care enough to remember.

_ does it sometimes, in some combinations. Some aren't allowed because they resemble code that is not allowed.

Now Lupus will NEVER KNOW this totally awesome site I found! Or is it just NSFW pr0n spam?

I was tempted to create a similar service and use the domain "thisisnotporn.com", but it ended up being too long a URL to be of any use.

I just activate the NoScript plugin in Firefox (if it isn't already on) before clicking on the link. Without scripts running, it's much more difficult (though not impossible) to become infected.

Tiny URL allows for previews.

Thanks, rivka! I like that a lot better!

If you enable previews, it will default to the preview for all Tiny URL links you click on in the future. (On that computer, anyway.)

I totally muted my computer before clicking that, expecting a Rick Roll.
